Monitoring and Observability | USENIX

reason I ask is, I'm good to drive down to Seattle after all given the state of uspoli, so I'm facilitating the #srecon open space / unconference on observability and monitoring with the wonderful Daria Barteneva! www.usenix.org/conference/s...

For anyone waiting for the video: my #SREcon talk is now up!

Lots of deep details in there about how hard it is to store data reliably and how tiny mistakes can turn into big problems.

9 HOURS LEFT!

Election Night in America is important, but let's talk about our REAL main event: the #Usenix #SREcon Americas #CFP deadline!

Get your talk in tonight so I'll have something better than elections to argue about over Thanksgiving. 🧵1

Aptitude Metrix COVID test results showing negative green light

I am pleased to report that I did not catch COVID from #SREcon. One of the best big conference venues I've been in, CO2 levels stayed under 650 in the main keynote rooms and below 800 in even the low ceilinged rooms and expo hall!

Flying back from #SREcon. This time AI will stay with us for longer. But not in the way we think about it right now.

If you were at my talk – The Computer Wants to Lose Your Data – the slides are now up!

Here's the customary 1000ft view of about half of them.

John Looney of Crusoe was discussing this at his morning keynote yesterday at #SREcon - describing "clean energy parks" where power consumers and producers gather, similar to the previous generation of network connectivity hubs.

Apparently a giant wind farm being built in western IE for this too.

Next #SREcon talk is another one of the many AI-related ones at this conference. Todd Underwood, the speaker of "SRE for GenAI and GenAI for SRE?" is from Anthropic. And I have to concede that he's really good at it.

Arrived a little late for day 2 of #SREcon, but luckily I haven't missed much of the first talk to which I was looking forward: "Lessons learned from building an L4 load balancing service". #SRE

Fun fact, 42% of our codebase (by LOC) was written this year, and we're only 9 months in! And yes, we're doing 2x builds & merges per week with only 50% more devs, thanks, AI & fast builds!

Mustering all my post-lunch attention for the #SREcon talk "50 Shades of Caching (and how LLMs are painting it black)" because AI bots are an increasing concern for us and our customers at @freistilbox.

Staying on the lower levels of the ISO OSI stack, I'm watching the #SREcon talk "Quo Vadis IPv6", feeling slightly guilty for my shallow knowledge of the topic.

Switching happily from the AI-centric initial talks at #SREcon to more fundamental operations topics. "ACK to the Future" is a great title to start off.

First end-to-end run through of my #SREcon talk done. Spotted some sections where I can improve the flow. Exactly on time, but I was speaking quickly so I'll probably trim a little material.

Happy with it overall.

I've been going down some real rabbit holes for the #Postgres fsyncgate part of my #SREcon talk.

I started another round of research on the Linux and Postres patches that solved it, blinked, and it was 2am. Oops 😅

I hope people find the talk as interesting as I've found the research for it!

Very excited about my #SREcon talk, but also can't wait to be out of slide layout hell 😅
