Gigantic Sunspot AR4366 just now. It's been tossing out X-class flares, but no CMEs. It has those locked up tight, so no aurora potential from that while it's crossing the meridian. Holding a solar filter up, it's just barely visible to the eye without magnification.

Zoomed in to highlight the sunspot areas in each of three images. The first image has a single small spot trailing and nothing above. The second has faint spots above and larger spots forming to the left. The third image has lots of small spots in a cluster above the main group and the trailing spots are more spaced out.
2025-06-23 - one large spot disappears around the right edge. Notice the absence of spots above and to the left of the clusters.

I took sun images for three straight days and it was really cool to watch the sunspots change in such a short period. Check out how the upper and trailing patches seems to materialize from nowhere and some of the areas shrank. Really cool!

Full disk image of the Sun in hydrogen-alpha light. Visible are surface granulation, filaments, sunspots, spicules, and prominences around the rim. It's a big improvement over what we have previously achieved thanks to Solar Toolbox for PixInsight.
Monday dawned clear and bright so we set up the hydrogen-alpha solar telescope and recorded some image sequences. Today was dull and cloudy perfect for learning new processing techniques. We've a long way to go but we think this picture shows great progress!

Our Sun as a light-gray disk. The active region AR4087 is near the mid-left edge of the image and contains two sunspots, one larger than the other. Two much smaller sunspots are near the right-hand, western edge of the disk.
Something new is on the horizon! Active Region 4087 is rotating into view after having recently blasted multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) into space. Its aim is off from hitting Earth but in coming days, we will be within the sunspot's strike zone.

This is a tight crop of our full-disk image focusing on acrive regions 4081 and, to its right, 4081.
Active Region 4079 will be rolling out of view soon without producing the kind of flares that might be expected from a sunspot of that size. It was an otherwise unremarkable photosphere today.

A full disk image of the sun made on May 7, 2025, showing only three active regions or sunspot groups. Two, to the left of center and one just above center, are fairly unremarkable. AR 4079, however, remains large and in charge, near the sun's western limb which is the right edge of the disk. The solar disk is light gray and the background is solid black.
The day presented unexpected periods of clear sky (between clouds) and decent seeing for our Sun shot. Hoping for better opportunities Friday though our feature of interest may be unavailable.

Giant Sunspot 4079 at lower right had a nearby flare while I was shooting. A smaller flare is going off near the upper left limb with a large fan-like prominence at 10 o'clock. This image demonstrates the difference between a flare (bright white) and filaments and prominences (darker red and orange in this image). Flares are much more violent explosions that bring up hotter plasma from deeper inside the sun while prominences and filaments involve hydrogen streams at the surface (photosphere) flowing more gently along the sun's magnetic field lines.

A large cluster of sunspots dominates the left side of the image while a single sunspot on the right side is the only other one really visible.
Day 4 of sunspot imaging! The smaller ones seem to have faded (or maybe it was shooting through high clouds?), but the big cluster is awfully pretty.

A full-disk image of the sun as it appeared on April 28, 2025. The large emerging sunspot is a dark patch at about the nine o'clock position along the edge of the disk. Other, smaller spots, are scattered across the disk though most of them are in the southern hemisphere.
Sunny skies and mild temperatures today presented us with excellent seeing for our Sun shot. Unfortunately, the rest of the week looks cloudy and damp!
