But the cameras still see. And so does she. A group portrait of four generations of Soviet scale-focus cameras “Smena”: the first, the third, the sixth, and the especially rare ninth. These models are more than devices — they are legends of mass photography, which made image-making accessible to everyone. Focusing was always “by eye” — using the distance scale on the lens, where the photographer chose: one meter, three, five, or infinity. This was the philosophy of the Smena: trust your own vision. And though their bodies belong to the last century, they are still alive. They still shoot. And the images they’ve captured will be shown soon. FED 5 #sovietcamera is mostly good. I scraped some goopy oil from the lens and now it focuses. 1/60 and faster work, so no flash sync. Rangefinder is a little off, so focusing is guesswork.
