Spohr's 25th string quartet does stuff with meter that's ahead of its time. The time signature is "4/8 3/8." At first the two alternate, effectively giving 7/8, but then he starts mixing them up. Stravinsky wasn't even born till more than half a century later. #classicalMusic #spohr

Never let it be said Spohr didn't have surprises up his sleeve. His 23rd string quartet is nominally in E major, but it starts with a C major chord and ends in the Phrygian Dominant mode (aka the Spanish scale) on E.

Spohr's 16th quartet uses a trick I haven't seen before. The 2nd movement is a theme and two variations in F. Then the scherzo, in A, is the next variation! It's followed by one more variation in F at the original tempo. #classicalMusic #Spohr

Continuing my Spohr quartet tour: The Opus 11 quartet (called "Quator Brillant") is an advance in some ways over his first two, but the 2nd violin, viola, and cello are relegated to accompaniment parts while the 1st violin does fancy stuff. #Spohr
