⚒️ #OTD in #Art #History 11 September 1503, #Michelangelo began sculpting the Twelve Apostles for the #FlorenceCathedral. Only one of the over-life-sized statues was begun. Called a "non-finito," the way in which #StMatthew emerges from the stone is incredible.
Pixel art of a gospel depicted in gold, with red pages and red, blue and light gold decorations in a medieval style featuring a cross within a jewelled border. The cover is depicted flat with the pages at a 45 degree perspective, imitating the distorted perspective used in icons historically - a tradition intended to remind the viewer that the icon is viewed not only by them, but also by God in His omniscience and by the Saint looking outwards from the icon, as it was explained to me by iconographer Aiden Hart.
Inspired by a talk on religious icons by Aiden Hart at Shrewsbury Orthodox Church (where there is currently an exhibition of icons + two more talks on 31 May & 5 June), I'm working on an icon of St Matthew. Here is his gospel from that piece. #pixelart #stmatthew #orthodox

Drawing in fine line pen and watercolour of the village church in Worthington. A traditional Anglican chapel with a long roof and no steeple, the main colour is brick orange and there's a red porch with a few plants and signs. It's quite cute and drawn in a quirky style.
#stmatthew #church #Worthington which is quite unusual. Standing right on the main road of a quiet little village, I had to pitch my picnic chair in a driveway to get this view. Was invited in to the coffee morning and even though I was miles away it turned out I had taught someone's grandchild!
