Screenshot of the following novel excerpt: “Can I get up now?” Ella asked.
Jen shook herself out of her shock. “Ummm, sure. Do you think you could walk to a bed? I’d recommend running some tests to figure out what happened.”
“I know what happened.” Ella stood and dusted herself off. “It’s all just…” she looked around the room again, “just so much to take in.” She noticed Jen’s name embroidered in royal blue on her light green scrubs. “It ain’t 1924 anymore, is it, Jennifer?”
“You can call me Jen, and do you mind me asking if you think it should be 1924?” She stood to match her patient.
“Well, it was three days ago.”
Jen nodded. “Okay, well, if nothing else we need to get you and your friend into some dry clothes, and I still really think you should consider those tests I suggested.”
Ella squinted her eyes and smirked at Ashley. “She thinks I’m gowed up, doesn’t she?”
Ashley chuckled. “Wouldn’t anyone who’d only seen what she has?”
“I guess you’re right.” Ella’s smirk faded as her surroundings caught her attention again. She forced her gaze back onto Jen. “I ain’t never done well with tests, but I like the part about findin’ some dry threads.” She saw the hospital’s name again and hugged herself tight. “And somewhere to lie down.”
Context: "Ashley" just magically revived Ella, who passed out after seeing her name (spelled wrong) on a memorial and realizing the world thinks she died a century ago. Jen hasn't got Aisling's name right yet, either, let alone grasped her proximity to the spirit world. #WIPSnips #suggest
