An amber-colored electric guitar in front of a small Fender amplifier. 6/13/25 “Some don’t lay every day, but it’s still good to check. There now. That wasn’t so bad, right?” She flipped the extra bit of fabric, lining her basket up over our cache, and steered me out the door of the large shed and into the warm, morning sunshine. “I’ll be needing your help with several chores, and this’ll be one of them. The other is helping in the stables with some stall cleaning and tack room organizing. Those will be in the afternoon. This is your chore to complete before breakfast.” Before breakfast? As in, get up while it’s still dark out and wake all your hens up to steal their eggs? I groaned inwardly, trying not to let a frown appear at the same time. And then more work later too? So much for taking it easy on me. “In return,” she continued as we walked across the lawn. “You’ll earn a paycheck like Pauly and Jer do. Money you can put towards things you want.” She gave me a warm smile, as if this news should make my day. I’d never had a job in my whole life. My parents wanted me to focus on school first, dancing was a distant second, and working wasn’t even mentioned. If I had my voice, I would have told her as much! You’re making me earn my allowance?
