Burned-out workers are using medical leave as a vacation to escape toxic bosses Under FMLA, eligible full-time employees in the U.S. can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for a serious health condition—and crucially, that includes burnout and mental health. In the U.K., workers can use Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) for up to 28 weeks. And some workers say they’re even getting paid while they decompress and job hunt. Lexi, for example, claimed short-term disability allowance while she was off—and by the time she was due to return to work 12 weeks later, she’d had another job lined up. But others (like this TikToker) are openly admitting to abusing the system and using medical leave as bonus PTO days. Using medical leave as a vacation might raise red flags, says HR Seven weeks into medical leave for her mental health, one TikTok user filmed herself hiking picturesque mountains. Her comment section sparked outrage. But she’s not alone—many of these videos are full of workers treating the FMLA less as a mental health resource and more as a workplace loophole to legally buy more time off. As one TikToker put it: “Take the FMLA, take the disability, take you a break… There’s so many people out here who are...

Toxic rain in Iran highlights environmental cost of war The environmental impacts of war are not new. Long before the war starts, the environment starts getting polluted. Building and sustaining military forces require vast amount of resources. They can be common metals or rare earth elements and critical minerals, water or hydrocarbons. To ensure that the military remains ready for war, it requires training, and training consumes resources. To build military vehicles, aircraft, and other infrastructure, countries need energy, and most often that energy is oil. According to a research by Science Daily, the CO2 emissions of the largest militaries are greater than those of many of the world’s countries combined. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Fast forward to March 8, when residents of Tehran were alarmed when dark rain began falling over their city. The unusual rain came shortly after Israeli drone strikes hit Iran’s oil storage sites and refineries. Due to the attacks, huge fuel tanks were set on fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky. When rain clouds passed over the city, the smoke, mixed with rain, brought polluted water down onto streets and homes. This is something similar to what the Gulf witnessed 35 years ago, when Iraqi forces, battling US and allies in...

Common plastics appear to be the key trigger for toxic algal blooms Petroleum-based microplastics have been shown to trigger sustained algal blooms, explosive overgrowths of algae that can turn water green and toxic. The minute plastics wipe out the tiny animals that normally keep those blooms in check. By removing these grazers, the particles can drive oxygen levels down, fuel toxic outbreaks, and cause the kind of ecological damage long blamed mainly on excess nutrients. Finding the trigger in ponds In a grid of outdoor pond tanks, clear water thickened with algae once petroleum-derived plastic entered the system. Tracking those changes over three months, Prof. Jonathan Shurin at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) documented that ponds receiving fossil-based plastic repeatedly lost their grazer populations and tipped into dense algal blooms. Biodegradable plastics placed in identical ponds disrupted the system far less often and rarely produced the same sustained algal dominance. Those contrasts pointed to plastic type itself as a driver of bloom risk and set up the deeper question of what changed inside the food web once the grazers began to die off. Grazers fell first Small copepods, tiny crustaceans that graze on algae, suffered most of the damage in the petroleum-plastic tanks. Copepods drift through the water, and they...

GOP Farm Bill Set to Unleash Pesticide Use and Strip Animal Welfare Protections The “Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026” that is coming up for a House vote this spring is yet another GOP-led assault on the country’s food safety, warn public health organizations, environmental groups, and animal rights advocates, who are sounding the alarm over the five-year bill. The House Committee on Agriculture passed the “Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026” on March 5 by a 34-17 vote. All 27 Republicans on the committee backed the bill, and seven Democrats crossed the aisle to join them. The legislation will now head to Congress. The 800-page document is being praised by Big Agriculture and industry groups across the nation, and Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-Pennsylvania), chairman of the committee, has described it as “ a collaboration between Republicans, Democrats, and stakeholders.” But public health advocates warn that the bill is set to further erode well-being and health in the U.S., further deepening the hypocrisy of Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s repeated promise to “Make America Healthy Again.” “Rather than address the economic crises facing America’s family farmers, this Farm Bill is a thinly veiled gift bag for Big Ag and pesticide manufacturers. It’s...

Some top US lobbying firms are working both sides of the Pfas issue at the same time Some top US lobbying firms are simultaneously working both sides of the Pfas “forever chemicals” issue, raising serious conflict of interest questions and concerns that their activity is slowing states’ efforts to rein in the public health threat. The review of six states’ lobbying records conducted by the non-profit F-Minus found a range of scenarios in which firms lobbied both sides. Most common Pfas are linked to cancer. The lobbying firm Holland & Knight works for the American Chemistry Council, which represents the nation’s largest Pfas makers, and aggressively opposes most regulations. Simultaneously, Holland & Knight lobbies for the American Cancer Society. In a statement to the Guardian, Holland & Knight said they follow “rigorous ethics and conflict-review procedures in all of its legal and public policy work”. They claim: “the report’s conclusions are based on a flawed premise that assumes any client relationship means the firm is advocating on that client’s behalf on every policy issue. That is a mischaracterization of the nature of the firm’s work for its clients and mistakenly implies conflicts where none exist.” Lobbyist Rocky Dallum of the Tonkon Torp firm lobbied against a state bill in Oregon that would have banned Pfas in many...

DEP's Initial Findings In First Report On Sampling Landfill Leachate For Radioactive Radium-- 'No Significant Risk To Human Health' Based On Concerns About Radioactive Mate The report says-- “DEP did not identify any levels of radiation associated with the landfill radium leachate investigation that raised concern for environmental protection or public health and safety. “No results were observed that would require landfill action or suggest changes to engineering or operational controls.” At the same time, the report goes on to say-- “While the radiochemistry results indicate that there is currently no concern with the levels of combined radium in untreated leachate, and therefore, based upon the NRC [Nuclear Regulatory Commission] developed limits, no current cause for concern with the levels of combined radium contained in discharges from subsequent treatment, it is important to recognize that more landfill leachate samples and radiochemistry analysis is warranted to generate additional data to confirm these initial findings.” “DEP recommends at least 4 more quarters worth of radiochemistry analysis of untreated landfill leachate at all 49 landfills to generate additional results that provide a larger data set with the level of accuracy and certainty needed to more fully assess the levels of combined radium in landfill leachate and the levels of combined radium between landfills that do or do not accept oil and gas waste for disposal. “The additional data...

These Genetically Engineered Brain Cells Devour Toxic Alzheimer's Plaques Alzheimer’s disease and cancer have something in common: They’re hard to treat. Despite decades of research, both still plague humanity, robbing people of longer, healthier lives. In Alzheimer’s, a protein called amyloid forms toxic clumps in the brain. Eventually, neurons supporting memory, decision-making, and movement wither. Whether amyloid clumps cause Alzheimer’s is still hotly debated. Drugs that clear the proteins have slowed disease progress, but only mildly. The FDA recently approved two such drugs for early stage patients. The approvals were controversial, however, due to risks, like brain bleeds. As scientists have struggled with Alzheimer’s, blood cancer treatments have undergone a revolution thanks to a therapy called CAR T. The treatment genetically engineers a patient’s T cells to hunt and destroy a handful of previously untreatable blood cancers. Taking a page from CAR T, a team at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis has now transformed brain cells, known as astrocytes, into amyloid-gobbling machines. A single injection into mice with Alzheimer’s prevented the formation of amyloid clumps in the brain during the disease’s early stages. In mice whose brains were already riddled with the toxic plaques, the treatment cut amyloid levels roughly in half. “This study marks the...

Deal reached to clean up toxic Bishop Tube site in Chester County This story is part of the WHYY News Climate Desk, bringing you news and solutions for our changing region. From the Poconos to the Jersey Shore to the mouth of the Delaware Bay, what do you want to know about climate change? What would you like us to cover? Get in touch. Three industrial manufacturers will pay $11.4 million to go toward the cleanup of toxic contaminants at the site of the former Bishop Tube metal manufacturing facility after reaching a settlement with Pennsylvania’s environmental regulators. The site in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, has been tainted for decades with toxic trichloroethylene chemicals, known as TCE. The commercial-grade solvent is commonly used as a degreasing agent for manufactured metal parts. Prolonged exposure to TCE can cause neurological, cardiac, reproductive and developmental health problems. Several businesses manufactured stainless steel tubes at the 13.7-acre site from the 1950s until 1999, contributing to various types of pollution. Under the agreement reached earlier this month, the site’s former operators — Whittaker Corporation, Johnson Matthey Inc. and Marcegaglia USA Inc. — will fund cleanup efforts. “Responsible parties should be held accountable for cleaning up these old contaminated industrial sites in the Commonwealth,” said Department of...

Iran war risks long-term toxic legacy for people and nature that ripples beyond borders Strikes on oil facilities and missile bases in the US-Israeli war with Iran are raising concerns among experts about a toxic legacy for human health and the environment that could linger long after the fighting ends. Since the conflict began, UK-based nonprofit Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS) has identified more than 300 incidents of potential environmental harm — from strikes on missile bases to attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. But the researchers say that figure likely captures only a fraction of the damage. "That's just the tip of the iceberg," CEOBS director Doug Weir told DW. "The US are claiming that they've hit 5,000 sites. So right now, we're just scratching the surface." The United Nations has also warned that recent strikes on oil facilities could risk "serious environmental consequences across the region, with immediate possible impacts on safe water, on air that people need to breathe, and on food." One sign of those risks came when "black rain" — a mix of oil and precipitation — covered the streets of Tehran following Israel's weekend strikes on multiple oil facilities. Fires at the facilities sent thick black smoke over the capital, home to nearly 10 million people,...

Toxic plume from Iran oil fires drifts towards Central and South Asia Fires at Iran’s oil storage facilities and refineries have released large amounts of greenhouse gases and pollutants into the atmosphere, potentially worsening air quality in neighbouring countries. Air quality alerts have been issued in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, while pollution could also affect western Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to the Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS), the incident poses serious short- and long-term health risks for the more than 9 million residents of Tehran. People in Tehran may face different concentrations of pollutants depending on their proximity to the fires, building density, time spent outdoors and weather conditions. Speaking to Anadolu, Mikdat Kadioglu of Istanbul Technical University’s Climate Science and Meteorological Engineering Department said pollutant clouds carrying the potential for acid rain are drifting toward Turkmenistan and Pakistan. Kadioglu said smoke from oil fires can spread across vast areas depending on meteorological conditions, noting that current winds are transporting pollutant clouds east and northeast. The academic said pollutants from Iran’s oil fires are currently drifting eastward at altitudes of 1-2 kilometres, posing no immediate threat to Türkiye. However, he warned that if winds shift westward, provinces in eastern Anatolia could be affected. He said fires at oil depots and refineries...

Poisoned skies over Tehran: Toxic smoke and black rain crisis Late on the night of 7 March 2026, massive explosions lit up Tehran's skyline as Israeli airstrikes struck multiple fuel depots and oil facilities on the capital's outskirts, sending towering fireballs into the sky and thick plumes of black smoke across the city. But what remains in Tehran's sky in the following days is more than the memory of a fiery night. At that time, the city's skyline was transformed as blasts rocked fuel depots across the northeast, south, and west of the capital, echoing as far as Karaj, a major city about 40 kilometres west of the capital. Massive fireballs turned the dark winter sky into shades of orange and red. Hours later, smoke began to engulf the city, forming a black cloud that gradually spread over Tehran and cast a heavy shadow over the ten-million-strong metropolis. By morning, the sun was obscured behind layers of smoke and soot, and daylight barely reached the streets. White cars parked along the avenues were coated in grey dust, and buildings appeared darkened. When rain began to fall, something unprecedented occurred. Dark droplets settled on car windows, pedestrians' clothes, and pavements, forming what many described as "black rain," as smoke from millions...

1,900-year-old double Scythian burial in Ukraine contains toxic red mineral Archaeologists in Ukraine have discovered red lumps of cinnabar — a mineral form of the highly toxic chemical mercury sulfide — in a 1,900-year-old double burial of two Scythian women, according to a recent study. The deep-red pigment, also called vermilion, has also been found in other prehistoric graves in Europe and may have been sprinkled on the newly dead to give them a reddish "flush" of life. But in the double burial in Ukraine, cinnabar may have also served a practical purpose: to slow the decay of older bodies. Prehistoric burials, including Scythian ones, were often reopened to inter more of the dead. Article continues below "We know that one crypt could function for up to 50 years in a row," study first author Olena Dzneladze, an archaeologist at Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences, told Live Science in an email. "We know for sure thanks to excavations that the Late Scythian crypts were opened and secondary and tertiary burials took place." The Scythians were a diverse but culturally related group of nomads who lived on the Eurasian Steppe stretching from Ukraine to China from about 800 B.C. to A.D. 300. The double burial with cinnabar dates to the first...

Childhood cancers linked to PFAS water contamination A recent study published by the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology examined the link between some childhood cancers and water sources contaminated by two PFAS chemicals - PFOS and PFOA - in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, California. In short: Children born in areas with PFAS contaminated water sources had an increased risk of childhood cancers. PFOA contamination was particularly linked to a higher risk of retinoblastoma (a rare eye cancer), while PFOS contamination was associated with higher odds of both retinoblastoma and neuroblastoma (a nerve cancer). The study authors emphasized the contributing role of multiple environmental risk factors, particularly given the high rates of poverty in these counties. Key quote: “This work can inform policies to reduce exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances [PFAS] and reduce possible health impacts.” Why this matters: PFAS, which are used in many everyday products, are associated with health effects including cancer, thyroid problems, liver problems, and developmental issues in babies and children. This study builds on previous studies of childhood cancer in California, including one we summarized in 2025 that found prenatal PFAS exposure may be linked to an increased risk of some childhood cancers. The results of these studies underscore the need...

Mining's toxic timebomb: dams full of poisonous waste are dotted around the world. What happens when they burst? As soon as the barrier broke, a flood of poison brought death to the river. Gushing through the fragile wall built to hold back mining waste in Zambia’s copper belt in February 2025, more than 50m cubic litres of acid and heavy metals poured into the Chambishi stream – a tributary of the Kafue River, the country’s longest waterway. Thousands of lifeless fish rose to the surface as a plume of acid floated downriver, leaving dead crocodiles and other wildlife in its wake. For the millions of Zambians that depend on the Kafue, the tailings dam collapse at the Chinese state-owned Sino-Metals Leach copper mine triggered a national environmental emergency that is yet to end. The spill shut down drinking water supplies for Kitwe, Zambia’s third-largest city, home to half a million people. Signs of pollution were detected 60 miles downstream from the collapse. Helicopters chased the spill downriver, dropping lime into the water in an attempt to neutralise its corrosive potency. The affected region is home to rare wildlife, including the Kafue lechwe zntelope, the Zambian barbet bird, and the wattled Crane. “It looked like diesel mixed with oil. We had already planted our crops, but they died. When...
