Common plastics appear to be the key trigger for toxic algal blooms Petroleum-based microplastics have been shown to trigger sustained algal blooms, explosive overgrowths of algae that can turn water green and toxic. The minute plastics wipe out the tiny animals that normally keep those blooms in check. By removing these grazers, the particles can drive oxygen levels down, fuel toxic outbreaks, and cause the kind of ecological damage long blamed mainly on excess nutrients. Finding the trigger in ponds In a grid of outdoor pond tanks, clear water thickened with algae once petroleum-derived plastic entered the system. Tracking those changes over three months, Prof. Jonathan Shurin at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) documented that ponds receiving fossil-based plastic repeatedly lost their grazer populations and tipped into dense algal blooms. Biodegradable plastics placed in identical ponds disrupted the system far less often and rarely produced the same sustained algal dominance. Despite decades of research, both still plague humanity, robbing people of longer, healthier lives. In Alzheimer’s, a protein called amyloid forms toxic clumps in the brain. The approvals were controversial, however, due to risks, like brain bleeds. As scientists have struggled with Alzheimer’s, blood cancer treatments have undergone a revolution thanks to a therapy called CAR T. The treatment genetically engineers a patient’s T cells to hunt and destroy a handful of previously untreatable blood cancers. Taking a page from CAR T, a team at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis has now transformed brain cells, known as astrocytes, into amyloid-gobbling machines. In short: Children born in areas with PFAS contaminated water sources had an increased risk of childhood cancers. PFOA contamination was particularly linked to a higher risk of retinoblastoma (a rare eye cancer), while PFOS contamination was associated with higher odds of both retinoblastoma and neuroblastoma (a nerve cancer). The study authors emphasized the contributing role of multiple environmental risk factors, particularly given the high rates of poverty in these counties.
