I find myself drawn more often to read Tu Fu
my feelings of travel, exile, and seeking refuge
echoed in his poems of refugee life and daily enlightenment

Also, by ‘my translation’ I basically took a big leaf out of Ezra Pound’s book and it’s me trying to express some of the ideas and feel of the original poem in English (and failing hard- I’m not Ezra Pound, or Octovio Paz) #translation #poetry #tangpoetry

Du Shenyan
“On a walk in the early spring
Harmonizing a poem by my friend Lu stationed at Changzhou”
Only wanderers can come
Ever new the shock of beauty,
Of white cloud and red cloud dawning from the sea,
Of spring in the wild-plum and river-willow…
I watch a yellow oriole dart in the warm air,
And green water-plant reflected by the sun.
Suddenly an old song fills
My heart with home, my eyes with tears.

Have I told you how much I love Tang Dynasty era poetry?

Most of it is based in longing: for good friends, for lost opportunities, for seasons, for getting drunk, for nature, for all sorts of crazy human existence things. I love it.

Mountains Midst - Wang Bo

Sorrow flows slowly
Far as the river
A thousand miles pondering
The means of return
A rising wind
Commands attention
As the hour draws late
In the mountains
Yellow leaves take flight

长江悲已滞
万里念将归
况属高风晚
