The Internet and You: Cybersecurity and Ethics for the Tech Illiterate

A photograph of scrabble titles spelling CYBER on a wood table with greenery in the background out of focus.

I believe that understanding how something works allows you a better chance at utilizing it effectively and protecting yourself and others from harm regarding it. In this case, that “it” is the Internet, a shorthand version of interconnected networks.

The first working version of a interconnected network was specifically used by the US Department of Defense called ARPANET. Short for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, ARPANET was in use from 1969 to 1980 before it was purchased and renamed Defense Data Network (DDN) which was in use from 1983 to 1995 and accessed by the United States and Israel- of course. 🙄

The Therapist Who Wasn’t There In 1966, a MIT computer scientist named Joseph Weizenbaum wrote a program called ELIZA. It was designed to mimic a Rogerian psychotherapist—the kind of therapist who mostly just reflects your own words back at you to keep you talking. If you told ELIZA, "I’m feeling sad," it might reply, "Why do you think you’re feeling sad?" If you mentioned your mother, it would pivot: "Tell me more about your family."

Fun fact
Basically every router, PC, and phone has an extensive UI with parental controls, as well as firewalls that you can set up to help prevent children from being exposed to adult content. It just requires you learn to fucking read for once.
