For the first time in a while, I’m working on a #ThreadTalk.

I have to figure out how to best do it here because threading, ironically, is very very bad.

I’m going to see if I can do a photo approach, with alt text, and perhaps I can keep it to 10-15.

Real talk: Superman was written by immigrants fighting Nazis in 1938. Woke isn’t new—it’s vintage JSON. Are we just now catching up? Drop your most baffled ‘hold up, he’s woke?!’ moment. #superman #woke #ThreadTalk

Anna Maria Garthwaite & Spitalfields Silk She was the preeminent designer of English Rococo style--but what was the world like in and around Anna Maria Garthwaite? A look at the tumultuous environment of Spitalfields, London.

Yesterday was Anna Maria Garthwaite’s birthday. If you don’t know her, you should! She was a pioneer of silk design in the 17th century in England, which grew due to the Huguenots escaping persecution in France.

I wrote a while #ThreadTalk about her! nataniabarron.com/2021/09/14/a...

Sadly, no #threadtalk today, since I’m traveling for work.

But next week is a topic I’ve wanted to go forever: sequins!

This gorgeous sequined gown dates from 1900, and is Worth.

Alas, there will be no #ThreadTalk this week, as I’m traveling for work. But I shall return the following Monday.

I have a few possible topics. Not sure which one I’ll do yet.

And now all I can think of is that I want a collaboration between @dieworkwear.bsky.social and @natania.bsky.social.

It's a good time to take a mid-week break and see some amazing thread work. About every ten panels click on the writer's post to follow the thread further. Over 20 in this thread!

@jaymgates.bsky.social , do you need a fabric/style break?

More talks by Natania at #ThreadTalk, or her Patreon.

Another awesome #ThreadTalk! I feel like I should break out some of my cape/cloak collection (yes, I have several) and prance around in them now (except it's nearly 3am here and I should be asleep).

Emile Pingat had a proclivity for designing carefully finished dresses and outerwear which made him one of the top three French fashion designers during the second half of the 19th century. Active between 1860 and 1896, Pingat was adroit at manipulating multiple textiles and trimmings into a cohesive and elevated garment. He was inspired by design elements of other cultures and often reinterpreted them into his own work, making them unique and intriguing. His elaborately decorated and impeccably tailored outwear was particularly sought after.

The bustle silhouette was the prevalent style of any 1880s woman's wardrobe. This cape mimics that silhouette, allowing the wearer to maintain the shape created by her dress underneath. The rich color of the royal blue velvet is evocative of the original wearer who at that point in time would have been seen as a precious jewel who required continual attention and assistance. That perceived helplessness is also reflected in the cape's lack of armholes, which would limit easy mobility. Pingat's treatment of the trim completes the luxurious quality of the garment with a liberal application of guipure lace in vertical lines emphasizing the statuesque, but somewhat removed, appearance of the wearer.

1 - 🧵Welcome to #ThreadTalk, #fashionhistory friends! It’s another week, and we have a new topic: Capes & cloaks!

Get ready to swish, cavort, and swirl. And perhaps even lurk out in alleyways or prepare to fight evil. Tonight is going to be fancy. (Met Museum, Pingat; 1885-89)

What are you wearing to the Bluesky Christmas party?

This Spanish cape @natania.bsky.social posted in #ThreadTalk on BLUE. It's giving Winter Solstice Queen and with a little fur and some reindeer antlers and silver bells should do the trick!

1 - Welcome to #ThreadTalk! Today we’re talking #fashionhistory with a Rhapsody in Blue! Nature’s rarest color.

Of course, the sky isn’t blue. That’s Rayleigh scattering. 🔹

Rare as it is, humans have still been wearing blue a long time. (Below: 1858 © Victoria and Albert Museum, London)

INCMI - #ThreadTalk is back. This is last week's, All That Glitters, abound gold in fabric.

Tomorrow's topic is all about one of my favorite pigments: BLUE! #FashionHistory

The thing I can do, right now, regularly and while the information is still accessible, is keep doing #ThreadTalk.

Fashion and fabric has always been about oppressive systems. Hell, the labor movement was founded in the industry.

Bringing truth to life in ways people do not expect.

ThreadTalk Dress of the Week | 1761 Cloth of Gold Bodice Worn by Lady Mary Douglas | Natania Barron Get more from Natania Barron on Patreon

Fun fact: #ThreadTalk didn't entirely go away. I have over 30 "dresses of the week" and lots of other #fashionhistory musings over on my Patreon.

And when I do a BIG thread, I always save some of the best for my subscribers. This week is an absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous bodice from 1761.

Constructed of silk velvet (one of Hartnell’s favourite fabrics) it is trimmed with coarse gold-coloured lace and small bows of silk shot in the blue of the velvet and gold of the lace. The bodice is lined in cream sateen. Beneath the unlined skirt a shorter sateen underskirt has a series of three semi-circular hoops on each side to produce the shape of ‘panniers’ or side hoops in a quasi 18thCentury style, each pair stabilised with tapes tied together across front and back. Judging by its various repairs, the dress was put to long service.
