A group of thrips, a type of insect, on the underside of a leaf near the midrib. You can see a black and white striped adult sitting to the left, with four shiny yellow young, called larvae, a shiny yellow prepupa that is just developing wing buds, and a shiny yellow pupa that has larger red eyes and more developed wing buds.
Ultra close up of an adult of this thrips species, It is dark gray with white wings, each with two black bands. It has large dark red, berry-like eyes and pointed antennae that are half pale with dark tips.

I love 'em & saw a new sp. a couple weeks ago: the water lily thrips! 🥰 It forms small colonies of all life stages on leaves (here the genus Nuphar). 1st image shows a new adult hanging out w/larvae & both pupal stages.

A close-up macro photograph of an immature thrips on a green leaf surface. The thrips is small, elongated, and a vivid yellow-orange color. Its segmented body is slightly translucent, with short antennae and delicate fringed wings starting to form. The surface of the leaf appears rough and textured with a dense covering of fine, white, hair-like trichomes, especially dense along the top left edge. Veins in the leaf are visible, adding a slightly raised pattern beneath the insect. The photo captures fine details of both the thrips and the micro-landscape of the leaf it rests on.
