A photo looking down at a large brownish fluffy moth with elegant sweeping blotches of yellow and pinkish brown and dark brown on its wings. It is sitting on stones.
Here's another elegant NZ moth for you. This one's called the Alpine Treasure Owlet (*Ichneutica maya*).
It's mostly seen up in the mountains in the South Island but also in the mountains of the lower North Island. I saw this one up at Boyle Village in the North […]

My photo of a man, Mike Bowie, at night taking a photo of a winged insect resting on a wooden post. You can see the white ring flash around the lens on Mike's camera.
Mike Bowie's photo of an adult antlion, which is a blue-grey insect with long wings. It's sitting on a green painted wooden post and I'm in the background out-of-focus smiling. This photo is CC-BY Mike Bowie.
Here are two views of one adult of NZ' antlion species, *Weeleus acutus*. It's predatory larvae live in Sarlacc-like pits in sandy ground where they catch unwary passing insects.
I uploaded my photo of Mike Bowie photographing the antlion to #iNaturalist and […]

A photo of a beetle on someone's hand. The beetle has long thread like legs, hairy antenna, brown eleytra and a black pronotum. The beetle has its wings spread out and elytra opened. It stands on the hand.
A male wasp's nest beetle, Metoecus paradoxus, from last year.
This species is a parasitoid of wasps, mainly Vespula vulgaris, the common wasp. It is also the only member of the beetle family Ripiphoridae that is found in the UK.

A photo of a tan brown moth. It looks like someone's written an "x" in black on each of its wings, but these are its natural markings.
"x" marks the moth!
Usually moths have sweeping curves and circles in their markings. Not so *Eudonia asterisca*, an aptly named NZ-endemic moth. It has a distinctive "x" mark on each forewing.
I photographed this moth at a moth light in the North Canterbury […]

Four light brown egg sacs of impressive size (each a couple centimetres long) hanging in a row from an ornamental shrub branch.
A large light brown spider with a net-like pattern on its abdomen and fuzzy legs curled up tight between two egg sacs.
Australian spiders continue to surprise and delight me. I thought these egg sacs were chrysalises and had to go back to find the parent Ordgarius spider after getting an #iNaturalist ID.

A close-up photo of the patterns on the wings of a NZ Green Carpet Owlet moth. They are swirling and looping patterns of greens and browns and creams. You can clearly see all the coloured scales that make the patterns.
Here's another NZ moth wing for you.
This one is from a particularly elegant colour morph of a NZ Green Carpet Owlet (*Ichneutica plena*). Usually they're greener than this.

Cut to white #naturalhistory #illustration of the Great green #bushcricket #Tettigoniaviridissima. It is facing right and has long thin antennae sweeping behind it. The whole insect is a soft pale green with tiny scarlet lines on the wings and top of thorax and head. The ovipositor is large and flushed crimson. Front legs point forward and hind legs are bent, ready to spring into the air. The wings are held at an angle that allows you to see the abdominal segments below. This insect was illustrated for a wildlife reserve in coastal Devon, UK, where the bush crickets hang out in unimproved grassland overlooking the sea
This is the Great green bush #cricket #Tettigonia viridissima, #sciart illustration, in watercolour.
I've seen these insects in the wild, but although large they're amazingly well camouflaged. I loved painting the the network of wing veins, and the sweep of the antennae. #insect #entomology

Front entrance of the Depozitář Národního Muzea in Prague. A broad gray stone stairway leads up to a modern white building with two tall blocklike upper sections. At ground level, a yellow revolving door sits beneath a large angular glass canopy, with benches and tall windows on either side. Bare trees frame the building under a pale blue sky.
Interior view of the Coleoptera storage stacks at the Depozitář Národního Muzea. A long white aisle runs between tall rows of compact white shelving with black wheel handles used to move the cabinets. Papers are posted on many doors, and fluorescent strip lights line the ceiling. A cart and worktables in the middle of the corridor emphasize the active collections space.
A museum specimen box filled with pinned psyllid specimens is held open in both hands inside the collection storage area. The insects are arranged in dense, orderly rows, each with tiny labels beneath them, creating a grid of carefully curated specimens. In the background are archival binders labeled Homoptera, reinforcing the scientific and archival setting.
Got to visit the Prague National Museum annex and poke around their psyllid collection. Very kind of them to walk me through it.
