A sitka shrimp in a tidepool; the rock is dark gray and coated with fuzzy tan to light green algae. The shrimp itself is clear with some white blotches and glowing white points and many red parallel stripes.

Sitka shrimp (Heptacarpus sitchensis) are common but often clear, and so getting sharp photos of them is quite challenging- and satisfying! These critters live from Alaska to Baja from 0-12 m down. #tidepooling 🦑🦀

An eight-legged sea spider - it is pale, pale yellow and has six segments on each leg - with each contorted leg making an s-shape. The body is small, the abdomen is small and narrow, and the head is so small it is hard to make out. It is clinging to the underside of a sandstone boulder.

I found my first ever sea spider while #tidepooling! This is probably Ammothea hilgendorfi. Pycnogonids are not arachnids, and are traditionally considered chelicerates, but may be an even earlier arthropod branch. Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. 🦑🦀

I spotted a baby Navanax sea slug (N. inermis) last week #tidepooling - only 2 cm long; very little blue, yellow spots more orange. These are opisthobranch slugs, related to sea hares, and hunt for and eat their nudibranch cousins (completely separate group of sea slugs!). San Diego, CA. #socal 🦑🦀

#tidepooling In October I finally saw my first Hedgpeth's sapsuckers (Elysia hedgpethi). These are not nudibranchs or seahares, but are sacoglossans! They are easily found on the algae Codium (aka dead mans fingers), which they eat. 🦑🦀

Last month I squeezed in some tidepooling during the king tides and left the beach at Laguna (OC) just an hour before my cousin's rehearsal dinner - and photographed this golden little beauty: a woolly sculpin, Clinocottus analis - my best fish photo taken during #tidepooling! 🦑🦀

Another new species for me during #tidepooling before my cousin's wedding in Laguna Beach, CA: a seal doto nudibranch, Doto kya - perhaps 4-5 mm long. Dotos are tiny bryozoan eating nudibranchs with paired cerata shaped like clusters of grapes. 🦀🦑

The overlook at the top of the trail gives a great view of the vast coastline. Along the water in the lower right, some beach-goers may be seen for scale.

A group of Ochre Sea Stars awaiting the return of the tide. If you look closely, there is at least one purple one hiding/caught underneath the orange one.

'Feed me Seymour!' A sea anemone at the edge of the tidewater. I believe the one's I saw were Starburst and not Aggregating as they seemed to all be solitary, but I could easily be wrong.

The active, but diminished landslide occuring at Agate beach. Overnight the night before I heard/felt a major addition to the slide occur from my nearby campsite. This whole park is slowly succumbing to erosion unfortunately.
