Yesterday was #WorldEnvironmentDay, and being that, coupled with our coffee morning for #VolunteersWeek2025 and Museums week #TogethernessMW, we thought it a perfect opportunity to hang our newly completed quilt up in the museum.

Change has always been part of life in Beringia. Glaciers advanced and retreated, landscapes shifted, and life adapted. That deep history reminds us: we’re not separate from nature, we’re shaped by it.

#MuseumsWeek today is #TogethernessMW & over 8 decades, volunteers have made Strathnaver Museum what it is today.

In the 1950s our founder's vision was to create a museum for the area. Their successors build on this & today Strathnaver Museum is an important attraction.

A photo of a web of blood red threads casting shadows against a deep brown wall. On the threads there are fabric blood bags which also cast black shadows.

The network of threads is part of a larger work named Vessel by Gemma Wood. The bags were sewn by community participants in the Korea Leukemia Patients Organization in Seoul and Bukkyo University in Kyoto as part of artist Leigh Bowser's Blood Bag Project.

Our Blood exhibition celebrates the connection and community that comes through shared blood and the act of giving blood. Blood donation and transfusion brings people together, both strangers who will never meet and families already bonded by blood.

There’s a unique kind of magic in this place. To journey alongside people whose hearts beat with the same intention, creating & exploring within these museum walls (under the Nova Scotian sky) it’s a privilege. We’re weaving something beautiful, together. ❤

A northern flying squirrel specimen laid out on a white background. The squirrel’s fur is in shades of orange, brown, and cream. The skin is posed with the specimen’s limbs held in an X shape, similar to how the squirrel would hold its limbs to stretch out its skin for gliding in life.

Between sprawling concrete and speeding cars, a city can be a hostile place for wildlife. In Winnipeg we share our city with an elusive small mammal you may not know is here… the northern flying squirrel! They're nocturnal and spend most of their time looking for food in the trees. #TogethernessMW

#TogethernessMW underpins our unique relationship with the Zulu nation. This unlikely friendship, forged after the Anglo-Zulu War 1879, now sees the people of Brecon and KwaZulu Natal working together. Here Zulu dancers entertain during our Zulu Festival in 2024.#MuseumWeek #humanity #sharedhistory
