A- #BookReview: Nobody’s Baby by Olivia Waite My Review: This follow-up to last year’s delightful Murder by Memory is, well, a bit more grounded than that series opener. That grounding being more than a bit ironic, as ship’s detective Dorothy Gentleman, along with the HMS Fairweather, the ship that she is one of the detectives both for and on, is three centuries out from Earth, headed for an unknown planet that still seems to be nowhere in sight.

At least, not afraid of the monsters on the outside. Because she knows those monsters intimately. From the inside. Because she’s the only doctor capable of treating their ailments and injuries when their own natural advanced healing isn’t enough.

A- #AudioBookReview: Through Gates of Garnet and Gold by Seanan McGuire My Review: Whenever I think of the Wayward Children series, I imagine of the chase scene from Monsters, Inc. that takes place in the vast, cavernous space where all the doors are stored. I want to see a place just like that in this series - but I KNOW that the doors that these wayward children go through, sometimes back through, and very occasionally stride through one more time - or even more - aren’t stored that way.

#BookReview: Boy with Accidental Dinosaur by Ian McDonald My Review: The opening scene of this book is absolutely, even cinematically, iconic. To the point where the reader can almost see it as the opening of a new Mad Max movie - except for one rather large detail. It’s the scene of a young man pedaling a dusty but serviceable bicycle on a cracked and ruined highway in a blasted post-apocalyptic landscape.

Grade A #BookReview: Nine Goblins by T. Kingfisher My Review: Before you begin reading Nine Goblins - and you SHOULD read Nine Goblins - expunge everything you think you know about goblins from your head. Because these goblins are not like that at all. And considering the way that goblins (and orcs and other supposedly born evil creatures) are used in fantasy as substitutes for whatever foreign element of the population is the enemy of the day, they probably never were.

Perhaps, especially the monsters, so that they have justification for the villainies they permit. And commit. If the end truly justifies the means, then ANY means, no matter how terrible, are permissible in order to serve a righteous cause. It’s all about ‘the greater good’ and is precisely what makes that phrase so monstrous.

A- #BookReview: The Heist of Hollow London by Eddie Robson My Review: This is a caper story. It says so right there on the label, doesn’t it? And it does not disappoint - even though this isn’t quite the caper that the reader thinks it will be. It’s not even the caper that the crew participating in it think it will be. Which, of course, is part of the caper itself, because they are the ones being conned and defrauded along with pretty much everyone else.
