“America’s captive” - #TheObserver

Apparently the #TortoiseMedia takeover has robbed the Obbo of the ability to say #abductee and #KidnapVictim

I miss the ‘paper that had my loyalty for decades, including while serving overseas, but they lost me after the ownership change.

Please stop reporting that #TheObserver features a “full-page photo” on the front cover.

This is not to emphasise any story.

When #TortoiseMedia began their destruction of the Obbo, they replaced #journalists with photo spreads, #news and #analysis with photo spreads.

I am on Week 3 of my boycott of The Observer, after reading it obsessively for decades.

The decline accelerated fast after the Howard Jacobsen article, and #TortoiseMedia did nothing to stop the rot, turning it into the world’s most expensive advertising handout (and ruining the barred crossword).

All the old certainties, the regular features, the familiar … I didn’t buy #TheObserver today for the first time in years; excluding time abroad, the first time in decades.

#TortoiseMedia took that from me. Why buy it if you hated it so much?

It was a NEWSpaper; I can get reams of adverts free.

#TortoiseMedia seem to have taken #TheGuardian’s pro-#Israel stance for #TheObserver and run with it, hoping to grow viable sales.

My patience is wearing thin. If not for the crosswords I would already be gone, and Gemelo is nowhere near the pleasure of #Azed.

Sort it, or lose another reader.

#TheObserver today:

Cover - Photo
Pp 2, 3, 4 - advert
P 5 - Contents
Pp 6, 7, 8, 9 - Opinion
P 10 - ‘News’ finally starts

Dear #TortoiseMedia,

Why buy it, only to wreck it? #TheGuardian was doing that just fine.

You have even stuffed up the crossword. Is #Gemelo paid by #Israel?

Dear #TortoiseMedia,

Why does Frank Skinner’s opinion about a #SpittingImage / #PaddingtonBear sketch merit a two-page spread in #TheObserver news section?

He is not a regular columnist, nor does he have an interesting slant.

Has this week been so bereft of actual news?

Bought and screwed over.

#TheObserver today:

Front cover: Rugby👍

P2: Advert
P3: Advert
P4: Advert
P5: Contents
P6: Old news - apart from the Rugby result, the rest is Friday or earlier.

Good luck, @carolecadwalla.bsky.social

At this rate, #TortoiseMedia will have destroyed the Obbo and you can take over the name.

How long has #TortoiseMedia owned #TheObserver?

Less than three months?

Slimmed down, words replaced by photographs, racist cartoons, gaps in sports coverage, cuts in music reviews, less reader input,

… and today a 7% price rise.

“We can do more for less” is, yet again, a lie.

Tortoise Media / The Observer political cartoon showing Jeremy Corbyn dancing in a red 1970’s-style disco jumpsuit with hammer and sickle logos, next to a red hammer and sickle carrier bag containing a red copy of Das Kapital and what appears to a a crass and racist representation of Zarah Sultana as a red packet of dried white grapes. Corbyn is saying “Let’s paint the town red”, and the cartoon caption is “You’re invited to Jeremy’s party”.

Not visible in the picture: the sound of large numbers of Observer readers wondering if they want to continue spending £4.20 on a shabby imitation of their chosen newspaper in its glory days.

Think hard, Tortoise Media and The Observer.

#TheObserver’s new owners seem determined to alienate any vaguely progressive or socialist readers.

#TortoiseMedia appear to have taken on a brand with a loyal following, purely to drive those supporters away.

I can’t think of a UK newspaper with a readership more sympathetic to #JeremyCorbyn

Is #TortoiseMedia funding #TheObserver profitable by sacking editors?

An item about #TheSaltPath twice refers to the wife as ‘Winn’, not ‘Raynor’, includes a strand about ‘Belle Gibson’ without actually explaining her fraud (must we watch Netflix to understand?), and eventually stops mid-sentence.

Seriously, #TortoiseMedia?

#TheObserver has a #Bezos wedding centrefold photo spread.

What was the previous record for destroying a respected NEWSpaper so quickly after buying it?

#Everyman X-word entrants are asked how often they buy the ‘paper. I bet that number falls fast.

#TortoiseMedia is wrecking #TheObserver, finishing what #TheGuardian started.

The magazine, long the dullest supplement, today has 4 pages on two deaths in a Paris gym, 5 pages/7 photos
of men’s fashion (no prices), and 4 pages on a writer of derivative “romantasy” fluff.

#TheGuardian began the process of turning #TheObserver from a progressive newspaper into a #Zionist shill.

#TortoiseMedia intend to finish it, with a farcical article suggesting #Mossad were “humbled” by #Hamas on #October7, rather than knowing in advance and moving #IDF troops out of harm’s way.

#TortoiseMedia seems only too happy to provide evidence for how badly they intend to destroy #TheObserver

This diagram of a ‘bunker-busting’ bomb includes a 5’ 10” person to show scale

… but the person has their legs apart, and is wearing a military helmet, both of which disguise their height.

I find it really touching that the pro-#genocide #WarCrimes-apologist #Guardian thinks I need help to make up my mind.

Having ruined #TheObserver, they handed it to #TortoiseMedia to turn it into an advertorial that, at £4.20 is the most expensive freesheet in the world.

Well done, #TortoiseMedia

#TheObserver yesterday carried a full-page profile of one of two female candidates likely to become the new #MI6 leader

… the wrong one

I wanted The Observer to flourish after liberation from the #Zionist #Guardian

Instead I got an expensive copy of a local free rag.

A spoof introduction for an ‘agony aunt’ column (referred to as an ‘apathy uncle’) by Keir Starmer.

A spoof introduction for an ‘agony aunt’ column (referred to as an ‘apathy uncle’) by Keir Starmer.

The new #TortoiseMedia version of #TheObserver sets a marker early, with a major coup - a quality columnist on a par with #BorisJohnson at a lower-tier rag.

… or maybe “#TwoTierKeir” writes at both levels? A leader of unlimited talent, determined never to be restrained by even the lower boundary.

Article quoting the 20th Century Observer owner and editor, setting out the newspaper’s ethics: “… roughly defined as trying to do the opposite of what Hitler would have done”

If #TortoiseMedia intend to follow David Astor’s principles, I think we will get along just fine.

Sadly, The #Guardian has gone too far the other way, defending #Israel and obscuring its #WarCrimes

*Other #Genocides are available, but #Palestine is a 75+year injustice.

The Observer newspaper calling out Donald Trump’s claim that “We’re putting a lot of pressure on Russia, and Russia knows that”, saying that “The reverse is true. The US is ready to accept Russian occupation of Crimea and all the territory it has annexed since February 2022”.

Personal comment: This is a good start.

The new #TortoiseMedia version of #TheObserver doing its best to cling on to disillusioned oldies who remember the ‘paper in pre-#Guardian days.

Under the Guardian, the Obbo had become almost toothless. See the Howard Jacobson piece.

Will it survive? Only time (and a bit of bite) will tell.

Fuckity bye RIP, the Guardian-Observer 1993-2025. It was not a natural death.

A powerful epigraph from @carolecadwalla.bsky.social here on her career at the #Observer.

We wait to see what #TortoiseMedia does with this venerable title. It will never be the same and — as Carole says here — a bond of trust with its readers has been severed.

Really UPSET #Guardian’s sold off #Observer to #TortoiseMedia.
It’s a FABULOUS paper.

#Cadwalladr is doing fine as an independent investigative journalist. Given her recent output, it comes as no surprise that #TortoiseMedia will not be renewing Cadwalladr's freelance contract. She should wash her hands of The #Observer, and move on.
