Building on the 2023 recommendations of the
APS Committees Task Force, the APS Council called for the formation of a new Inclusive Committee Structure Working Group (ICS-WG) in October 2025 to assess and recommend ways to evolve APS's current committee structure to support members from across the full spectrum of groups historically marginalized or underrepresented in physics.
We are hosting virtual open focus groups to ensure the ICS-WG understands the needs of the entire community. These are open to everyone. In particular, we would like to meet with those who have not felt they have representation in the current APS structures, such as LGBTQ+ physicists and physicists with disabilities (physical and neurodivergent/ mental health).
Why join?
β’ Define the Purpose: Share your perspective on the needs of underrepresented groups in physics and the true value and role of inclusion-related committees at APS.
β’ Evaluate Support: Help us understand if current APS policies and structures actually enable affinity groups to succeed or if they create barriers.
β’ Center Sidelined Voices: Ensure that upcoming organizational changes are informed by lived experiences and reflect the intersectional needs of individuals that have historically been sidelined.
Looks like the @apsphysics.bsky.social is convening focus groups to inform a new Working Group to evolve the org's committee structure to be more inclusive of underrepresented or marginalized groups.
