Dear Sweet Jesus In The Morning. Every time I get a camera out I want to produce some kind of image that exults the person in front of the lens. I have delusions of grandeur that should bring a giggle to everyone. Let's make it ART! Let's make it something AMAZING! NOBODY has ever seen THIS! LOL. Honestly, the best things, every time, are the things that teeter on the edge of total failure. I've posted before about my inadvertent adventure up the poop chute of the internet, a hidden backdoor I found that basically bypasses Patreon (and other) passwords and has let me wander freely through the posts from my favorite photographers. Best. Ego Boost. Ever. Honestly, I miss my mark nine times out of ten. I get all caught up in the moment, totally forget what I'm trying to achieve, am often overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of what's transpiring in front of me....sidebar: my cooking resembles this a LOT. I start out aiming for traditional mole and end up with a sort of Thai peanut sauce for all the same reasons! And maybe that's OK. I just adore my friend Floofie. She is gracious and kind and multifaceted and never fails to surprise me. This image isn't shocking, it doesn't "push an edge"....but it's honest and beautiful and captures a mood. Floofie has come along with me through a whole bunch of phases of MY development and I've seen HER be both a calm center and go through a lot of changes. Maybe most important, I've never felt afraid to fail and so I've tried a lot of stupid ideas when working with her. What an amazing gift of confidence that is. And sometimes it's not about the edges. It's about the moment and the mood and just being comfortable with each other. Thanks, Floof!

The body is a transitory phenomenon and I am continually surprised at the subtle things a body can do, whether telling stories through shapes and pose or conveying emotion through a welter of angles and elbows. In my personal life I've always been attracted to an inner persona that animates and shines through the physical. I've been looking around for some travel opportunities and find myself thinking about finding models in new cities. I've had amazing luck over the years to meet really wonderful new friends whose stories twine into the adventure. Perhaps one of my LEAST favorite aspects of model photography is that I find myself being persnickety over someone's image -- I'm not fond of tattoos on a model, particularly since I started with so much patterning and still, as here, like a dramatic one-light where the body produces shadowing. Tattoos disturb the image and bother me terribly. I should note that I'm fine with them otherwise -- they're an art form and deserve to be shown off. I'm just not the one to do that task. Most important though is the attitude that comes through the face and eyes. My favorite people convey SO much through their expression and eyes. Sometimes I find myself overly-dismissive -- looking for and failing to see that ineffable "something" in a portfolio. I debate myself frequently -- who am I to make judgement from such an oblique bit of evidence? But I'm also quite sure in my judgement. Life's too short to chase everything. I sometimes think snap judgements are a superpower. I've met con-men and immediately recognized them. The occasional person whose arc I can easily see in my minds eye. Whether it's a vibe or a recognition, I don't know, but there it is.

When I think of Lucy a lot of terms come to mind. She radiates a wonderful combination of strength and kindness, all wrapped in an unflappable poise (and, honestly, WHO would want to cause her any flap? You'd be a terrible human.). So it's always surprising when an image pops up that shoves raw energy through the screen. It might be MORE surprising given my knowledge of her disposition. This came toward the end of a struggle with some pallet wrap. We talked about bit about the environmental "ugh" of plastic but agreed that making art out of ugh might be its highest purpose. The plastic wrap theme has been fascinating over the past couple years. I believe I've tried it almost a dozen times -- the first few indoors, with decidedly mediocre results. It came alive when I took it to a grove of trees in a local natural area and shimmering sunlight and reflections gave me the permeable interface I had been hoping to achieve. Each of the last half dozen sessions have been very different, driving home my idea that the photograph is a collision between camera/intention/experience and environment. I continue to keep an eye out for the perfect space for this, indoors or out. I'd love to find a high-ceiling'd warehouse-y space with lots of upright columns and enough time to turn it into a shining spiders web to play in. Or maybe a stand of alder, whose trunks are better-suited than fir or pine for this sort of thing. More to come! '- )
In my mind, the perfect experience with plastic wrap would be to allow the model to float in the air on what would appear as a sea of light. This is, as you might suspect, more difficult to achieve than one might think. There have been a few brilliant moments in this. Each model has managed a different direction, sometimes even managing to be "on-brand" in the process. Amazing. I honestly cannot wait for summer and an opportunity to spend some time on the next iteration.
