Why would legislators ban standards-based grading? There isn’t even a rationale (maybe “writing rationale” was one of learning targets not mastered by this author).

Since my assessment approach (evidence with a grade pitch) is so different from what students are used to & since not every task adds to an ever-changing average, students sometimes will not prioritize tasks in our class over other courses.

A5: By inviting them to share their goals beyond a grade. Highlight the importance of learning outcomes. “Choose Your Adventure” assignments where they tell me what they want to do & how to assess it. I worked with a local district today to talk about assessment philosophy and trace my own journey. Excellent discussions on using 0s, the 100-pt scale, percentages versus letter grades, retakes, and student reflection!
It was my 2nd consulting gig, and this work is so engaging!

I think many of my students are unsettled that the grade is no longer behavioral. They are used to doing only things that are graded, and that's the key to their success. So we talk a lot about what structures I've set up to scaffold their learning, how to get help, etc. #UngradingChat A2
