Allegory of Winter 1948
Spanish/Mexican Remedios Varo 1908-1963 "Her artwork depicts a desolate, wintry landscape featuring skeletal, cacti-like plants. White, web-like 'pods'or 'cocoons' contain living elements like birds & flowers, hinting at potential rebirth amidst the barrenness."

"Mujer saliendo del psicoanalista" (Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst) by the Spanish-Mexican surrealist artist Remedios Varo.
Painted in 1960, it is one of Varo's most famous works.
The painting depicts a woman leaving a building that is believed to be a psychoanalyst's office.
She is holding a severed head, which is thought to represent the rejection of a patriarchal figure, possibly her father or the psychoanalyst himself.
Varo's work is known for its mystical, fantastical, and dreamlike scenes, often exploring themes of science, alchemy, and the occult.

"Taxi Aquático" (Aquatic Taxi), a 1962 painting by the Spanish-Mexican Surrealist artist Remedios Varo.
This painting is known for its dreamlike quality and the blend of human figures with mechanical elements, characteristic of Varo's style.
It features two figures in what appears to be a water vehicle, with one figure pedaling a large wheel and the other seated in the front.
The background suggests a fantastical architectural setting with arches and stone structures rising from the water.
Varo often incorporated elements of mysticism, science, and the subconscious into her works, creating unique and enigmatic narratives.
...
Remedios Varo was a Spanish-Mexican surrealist painter. She was born in Anglés Cataluna, Spain in 1908 and died from a heart-attack in Mexico City in 1963. During the Spanish Civil War she fled to Paris where she was largely influenced by the surrealist movement. She met in Barcelona the french surrealist poet Benjamin Péret and became his wife. She was forced into exile from Paris during the Nazi occupation of France and moved to Mexico City at the end of 1941. She initially considered Mexico a temporary haven, but would remain in Latin America for the rest of her life.

In Mexico she met native artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. However, her strongest ties would be to other exiles and expatriates, and especially her extraordinary friendship with the English painter Leonora Carrington. Her last major relationship would be with Walter Gruen, an Austrian who had endured concentration camps before escaping Europe. Gruen believed fiercely in Varo, and gave her the support that allowed her to fully concentrate on her painting.
She often worked in oil on masonite panels she prepared herself. Although her colors have the blended resonance of the oil medium, her brushwork often involved many fine strokes of paint laid closely together - a technique more reminiscent of egg tempera. She died at the height of her career.

In Remedios Varo's "Cold," a thin, pale figure with a bird's beak and dark eyes floats above stormy clouds. She holds a large funnel from which luminous white dots fall, forming a beam of light that reaches a snowy landscape dotted with small red-roofed houses and leafless trees beneath a gloomy sky.

Like many figures in Spanish artist Remedios Varo’s paintings, the subject of "The Call" projects a sense of solemn preoccupation, as though in the midst of a momentous adventure. Wearing flowing robes and carrying alchemical tools, including a mortar and pestle at her collar, she traverses a sort of courtyard. Her hair forms a brilliant swirl of light, which seems to bring her energy from a celestial source.

This work reflects Varo’s characteristic color palette: the central figure, illuminated in fiery orange-gold tones, walks through shadowy, more muted surroundings. Precise lines reveal unexpected details, such as walls that appear to entomb figures in tree bark.

Varo’s own features, particularly her large eyes and long, straight nose, often appear in the faces of her protagonists, emphasizing the importance she placed on her perspective as a woman. The figures are frequently androgynous or not-quite-human alter-egos, with witty and delicate features of fauna or otherworldly creatures.

"The Call" reflects her surrealist influences and interest in alchemy as well as her talent for evoking ambiguous narratives through art. Varo created this work near the end of her life, while living in Mexico and growing in artistic reputation.

She moved to Paris in 1937, later finding that she could not return to Spain following the Spanish Civil War. As World War II threatened Paris, Spanish refugees came under threat. Varo was arrested and held in early 1940. After her release, she fled Paris in the face of the Nazi invasion, and by late 1941 had secured passage to Mexico.

There, Varo remained friends with fellow refugees from her European surrealist circle, including artist Leonora Carrington, who became her closest friend and collaborator. In the late 1940s, as she supported herself through commercial illustration, Varo began to develop her mature personal style which we see here in this painting completed less than two years before she passed away in 1963.
