Not exactly a WIP, but wanted to share a bit of my fantasy novel STARLIGHT for #WIPSnips March 8th #wordprompt as the word, "beam" is a rather significant one to the story...and well, what story isn't a work in progress, after all. 🙂

When I was little, if I was naughty Mum would sometimes send me to bed early and say, 'What 'til your father gets home!' However, when Dad did come home, he would come up and and just giggle with me. I used the #wordprompt to take it to a new level 😜 #wordprompt #poems4kids #slipperyslope

1999 Y2K
“Cecilie, are you ready for the festivities tonight?” Cameron asked her, as they stood in the driveway that connected their properties.
“As ready as anyone else,” Zhe’ra laughed. “Afraid of the fearsome Y2K bug Cam?”
Her son had lost his wife a few years ago, cancer is an awful disease that she couldn’t help her with in time. Toby, her grandson, had moved back in with his father when his wife left. Together they had raised his son, Thomas. Zhe’ra had become a bonus aunt to the family. Which suited her fine. They still thought her the daughter of the lady who had lived her before.
“I’m not,” Cameron continued, “But poor Thomas is doing his master's in information technology, I’m sure he must be!” He laughed. “Well, best get in and make sure the turkey is ready. Come on in around seven, and we’ll eat until the sky lights up with rockets!”
She acknowledged him as she went into her own house. Sending a quiet prayer to the Light that Thomas would be sensible and not party outside all night, the city he was in was cold enough for people up get frostbite indoors!
A few hours later, dressed in a modest black dress she knocked their door and was welcomed in, greeted by the lovely smells. Cameron and Toby both looked so much like her dalliance in Munich so long ago. Striking men. She was lucky they’d never had a romantic interest in her.
“Let’s toast to the end of a millennium!” Toby said, lifting his glass. Unaware how old his neighbor actually was…
“Let’s relinquish the worries of the past, toast up a new beginning!” Cameron added.
Zhe’ra lifted her glass too, “And toast to no conclusion of existence tonight! Y2K is just a worry for the young!”
The two men looked at her. She wondered if she should tell them who she was. No, the time isn’t now.
“That’s oddly specific,” Cameron said, “No conclusion?”
She smiled. “Reading the news, it seemed the world is ending tonight. I don’t think anything bad will happen. Maybe someone will get an extra zero on …

“That’s oddly specific,” Cameron said, “No conclusion?”
She smiled. “Reading the news, it seemed the world is ending tonight. I don’t think anything bad will happen. Maybe someone will get an extra zero on their bank balance – or one less. The world will keep going. It’s just a phrase. I’m old fashioned that way.”
Cameron and Toby laughed,
“Cecilie, you’re the same age as me! Are you saying I’m old?”
Zhe’ra tried to move back from the metaphorical cliff she’d placed herself at. “You’re right dear neighbor! Shall we eat?”
They ate and enjoyed the evening. Watched speeches talking about hope for peace, and prosperity for all.
Thomas called his father just before midnight, lamenting not being there with them. Apparently, he was spending midnight with a girl he’d met recently, one he wanted to introduce them to in the new year…
“To the New Year!” Toby said, handing Zhe’ra and Cameron each a glass of champagne! “Maybe I’ll have a daughter-in-law soon!”
“To the New year” Cameron and Zhe’ra both echoed back.
“Thomas will find his way, let him finish his education.”Cameron turned to Zhe’ra. “And a toast to you! Without your generous gift we never would’ve been able to let him pursue his education so easily.”
“I live alone, I inherited a lot of funds, why shouldn’t I help the last child my mother helped come into the world! She always spoke of you all with so much fondness. I think she considered you all family.”
Cameron went in for a hug. “She always was part of my family. And so are you, practically a cousin!”
Zhe’ra went home, feeling happy, the world was changing, but still here. The computer still worked, the tv still showed celebrations. She’d spent the turn of the millennium with her kin. And she had a feeling young Thomas; young Thomas would be the father of the one she waited for. When he called his father earlier, she’d got a feeling. The girl he was getting to know now was the mother.
Now all she could do was wait – and dream of what comes next…

1850 – Peru
The temple was hard to find, built under a large piece of rock. Villagers had spoken of it in hushed tones as she had wandered the terraces in the surrounding area. There was peace here, on top of the mountains. Row after row of terraces, baking in the mountain sun.
Zhe’ra sat there, in the hidden temple as the sun descended across the ocean. Her awareness told her of a vast cave network that seemed to reach further than she could follow. Has anyone ever walked to the end of the tunnels? Should I? No, she didn’t think that was for her.
Back in the ruins of a forgotten city, Zehra looked out over the moonlit mountainscape. It certainly has nocturnal charm. She was mesmerised by the beauty she could see – and feel. Some of the walls and fences of the town seemed to have been melded together, perfect fit – almost like the stones in the pyramids at Giza, but more intricate.
She could feel how beloved this area was but couldn’t help but wonder why it was abandoned. Were they betrayed? Some of the stones seemed to be liberated from the ground, like so many she had seen on her wanderings. Not that there seems to be much soil to bury things with here.
Allowing her awareness to prod the ruins she immediately was hit with the feeling this city wanted to be left alone. Strange. It feels like Light has been used, but this kind of warning? She was uncertain, but she decided to start the long trek back down the coast.
She could make a portal, except there seemed to be people in the most unlikely places in this region, she simply didn’t know where it was safe to emerge. But, what’s this? Something is pulling on my senses. She gazed towards the horizon along the mountains in the direction her instinct told her she needed to travel next.

1670, Transylvania
The town Zhe’ra was walking through was strange. It feels… dark…. People went through doors, shut them tight as soon as they saw her. On doors and porches were bouquets of garlic, hanging upside down, as if to dry. But so many? And everywhere?
The rope looked like silver, reminding her of the tinsel she’d seen in Germany. But here, here it seemed to ward off something. The whole town was as if an evil spirit had taken hold. She walked to what looked like an inn, knocking before trying the door.
Inside the same darkness roamed, though she could smell food cooking somewhere. When calling out didn’t work she decided to sit down and wait.
A while later, a head carefully poked through the door toward the kitchen. She thought she heard whispers of ‘no purple eyes’, before the two came into the main room and seemed warmer. They asked her what she was doing there, carefully teased her for walking through the most horrible town in Europe.
After they had left to fetch her a meal, she thought of what they had spoke of. A mercurial spirit. Moods changing in a whim, afflicted with some sort of evil. I wonder what it can be? And, the mention of purple eyes? It reminds me of rumours from my homeland… it doesn’t sound like something they cherish, when they are this wary...
She ate the stew in contemplation. Could a person afflicted with Darkness exist here, in this time? The stew was good, had a slightly bland flavor, with hints of spices, mint, and something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Zhe’ra payed them and asked where the evil spirit was – so she could avoid it, of course.
Apparently, the spirit was holed up in a ruined mansion outside the town, accordingly the couple it preyed on people who walked the road at night. Of course, she wasn’t going in there to clobber the creature to death, but she did accept the small wooden pole which had one end sharpened.

Of course, she wasn’t going in there to clobber the creature to death, but she did accept the small wooden pole which had one end sharpened. Approaching the old mansion she could feel the Darkness seeping out from the build…

Approaching the old mansion she could feel the Darkness seeping out from the building. What power did they use? Flows of fire? Purple eyes pierced the darkness within. The innkeepers had said it avoided daylight, though it was heavily overcast today.
The creature retreated, giving her a way into its lair. Carefully she walked, fully connected to the one power, ready to portal away in an instant if she had to.
The room she came into was dark, and smelled of delay, musk and… blood… through the power she could enhance her sight, and she could see bodies in various stages of decay. And, the creature with the burning eyes huddled in the far corner, shielding its eyes from her,
“Are you alone? Are you hurting?” She asked carefully.
“…lone…. Hurting….” He said, with strain. “Kill me, please”
The poor creature, inflicted by Darkness, reduced to a sole core of a being, she wondered if anything she could do, could help the creature regain itself.
“Hurry… before… craving…” the creature weakly explained, baring its teeth in a snarl.
The teeth. They seem sharper. “I will help you,” she said, preparing to call up flows of fire and air. Tears in her eyes. She lifted the creature in a whirlwind of air. “I’m sorry… I hope this releases you.” Adding fire to the vortex, increasing the temperature to well beyond what was needed. Tears streaming as the creature evaporated. She had never liked taking life,
Even life as far lost to the Darkness as him.
After the creature was gone, the clouds started dispersing, letting Light back into the town. She would leave it to the townsfolk to clear out the house, but now that the sunlight had returned, the town could finally breathe again.

1946 New York
The Bell rang as they came close to the harbor, when it stopped ringing it seemed an umbral hush seemed to fall e over the gathered. Zhe’ra and the Doctor stood watching the approaching pier. The large mass of buildings stretching out before them had a strange pull. Zhe’ra thought it was the ugliest city she had ever seen. Doctor Cornelius thought his future was secure in such a city.
The stormy journey had brought them close – a whimsical affair in a tin can steaming ahead on the Atlantic. She had to admit he was brilliant, his knowledge far exceeded what she’d expected for such a young man. And passionate like Mars, the god of war himself. Shame he’ll be assimilated into the mass here…
She had already offloaded her trunk again, into her storage place. All she had left was her little bag with a small selection of necessary items. She could see a thread poking out, which she quickly stuffed back in the bag, closing it tight.
At the pier, she hugged the doctor and wished him well. He tried to make her stay, with him, in the city where he’d already had a job offer. An offer that came with a nice accommodation nearby. She graciously declined his offer. He wanted a wife and had found her worthy. He had been thrilled when he found her more competent than other girls he’d met.
She left him there, as she got in a waiting taxi, she saw him stood there still, watching her leave. She sighed. He’s fun, but he’s not her. My longing is great now….
Arriving at New York Central Zhe’ra took one last look at the city around her. Before she found and boarded a train to Chicago. I’ll make my way towards the town in Minnesota where my son lives from there…

As Zhe’ra had done before, waiting until midnight she opened herself to the Power. Let it flow through her to create the swirling portal in front of her. Letting her awareness through she felt the area around the other end was calm and still. Perfect! She stepped through, her travel bag in hand, and stepped for on the cobblestone streets of London.
Stopping, she stared at a tall building, it sat right where her old cabin had been, more than 400 years ago. Her beautiful garden – now built over, turned to stone – the bog that used to be beyond, just more buildings. Sighing, she continued. I need to find the train that can take me to the ship.
Nearing the train-station she felt something. Like faint esoteric tracings. Someone has used Light here, recently. It reminded her of the traces she’d felt in St. Petersburg, many years ago. Once could be nothing. Twice means there is another channeler walking the earth. She felt vindicated in believing the first encounter had been more than a whisper,
The trace led right into the train she needed, so she boarded and felt the remnant all the way to Southampton. Past the statue of the founder of the ship company, all the way to the edge of the pier – where whoever it was had boarded a ship. To where?
She felt the air around her, stretched her awareness as far as it could go – no indication of where the person had traveled to. She appraised them though, leaving that trace means they need to have learned enough to guide themselves!
A man approached her, asked if she was all right, stood there just looking out over the sea as she was. He explained he was a doctor, and asked if she was going on to New York, as him.
She smiled at him and said yes, she had just been enjoying the fresh air. She was going to New York.

A man approached her, asked if she was all right, stood there just looking out over the sea as she was. He explained he was a doctor, and asked if she was going on to New York, as him. She smiled at him and said yes, she had just been enjoying the fresh air. 1716, Cape Town
The journey down the coast had been arduous, heavy winds and tall waves tilting the ship any way it pleased. Arriving in Cape Town Zhe’ra took Nera’s hand and let go of the lumbering weight the journey had left her with, giving way to uncertain gaiety instead.
What type of city this was to live in, remained to be seen, but she thought they could be happy here. Letting her hand brush against the rough wall as they passed. They needed a place to call their own.
The first night they stayed at an inn, which was cozy enough. They found a little cottage not too far outside the city the following day. It wasn’t big, but they didn’t need much, as long as they were together, they’d be fine.
In their main room a fixture was built into the ceiling, where they could light candles and make the room bright. A wonderful detail! The rest of the furniture were functioning and would do them well. The walls were covered in a wallpaper with depictions of local wildlife.
Nera thought one of the creatures looked like an elk, but smaller. Zhe’ra wasn’t sure but urged them to finish up cleaning up the place so they could get to bed.
Only a small bed was located there, barely big enough for two small bodies, better so, when they were two people in love who didn’t mind being intimate.
Nera let one hand caress her love along her body while saying, “we’re home, my love.”
Zhe’ra relaxed. Their tourney from Marrakesh had been a struggle, now they could finally breathe again.

1965 Christmas with the Neighbors
Zhe’ra looked through her wardrobe, hoping to find something to wear. She had been asked by her neighbor two houses down, if she wanted to attend the Christmas Eve service at the church. Her son, Cameron, had seen so hopefully when he came to her door to ask, his wife had baked some delicious cookies she’d brought with him.
After his adopted parents had died he’d sought her out more, not because he knew she was his mother, but it still seemed like he felt a connection. She certainly did, even if she wouldn’t act on her own. She’d said yes, and he’d said that after the service she was welcome for a Christmas dinner at their house, something she had done before, as a guest in his parents' house on a few occasions when he himself was growing up.
In the church her grandson, Toby, now ten years old, had wanted to sit with her, which warmed her heart. While the priest talked of a benevolent god, and etherial visitations of this or other entity, she was simply happy to take part in family activities like this. When the chorus stepped up to do Christmas carols, she simply felt the love and the Light fill the room. Absolutely magical! Despite the religion itself is a hoax

Zhe’ra zoned out of the mass, thoughtful. How can a religion that sits so close to the truth in spirit, be so far removed in practice? There is beauty everywhere here, but the way the preach… she noticed that Toby was standing, looking askance at her. The service was concluded, and they were heading home. Since they came from the German tradition, tonight would be dinner and gifts.
Surviving the evening was surprisingly easy. The food was good, a turkey cooked to perfection, with lovely sides. Rice pudding for dessert, something that brought her thoughts back. After dinner, coffee and cakes. And presents. Toby got many nice toys and clothes, but when he opened her gift, his mouth dropped. A blue dragon, with movable limbs, articulating wings and fire in its eyes. The toy in itself wasn’t much, but she had infused it with a little power, just enough for the kid to notice some of it.
Toby came to her and hugged her so tight it warmed even the deepest corners of her soul.
She excused herself then, she had the night shift at the hospital. They all thanked her for coming and wished her well. When her son also hugged her, she hid a tear. Closeness I never thought I’d have. She walked towards the hospital, merry in spirit, strangely hopeful.

1928, London
Spending a few weeks in London had been a holiday. She’d continue to Munich soon. That’s where her heart said she should be next. Today though, Zhe’ra had found an interesting book – The Call of Chthulu – a book that told of ancient eldritch fables. Reading it she saw hints of other writers. Even back to stories told in her own youth. Stories of monsters and darkness keep getting replenished in the world.
The religious man staying in one of the rooms beside her had made a cross with his hands and tried to bless her when he noticed the book in her hands. She’d laughed once she got back in her room. The room smelled so nice, the stewardesses had placed fresh flowers in a vase that looked like an old goblet on the dresser while she was out. How nice!
That evening she walked by the Thames, sitting by its bank she let her awareness spread. She could feel the tide moving the water and she could also feel a couple arguing behind her. The feeling is… scorn? Contempt? Disgust? The rest of the area was peaceful. A couple older men sat at a table further down the bank, playing a game of chess. How nice.
A sharp sound snapped her to attention – a rapport echoed across the river. Someone was shooting at ducks, there on the other bank. Disturbing those poor creatures – and me! She opened herself to the Light and pushed a wall of air at the hunter, making him fall and loose his weapon while the ducks took off.
These checks of her area had become an almost nightly routine, ever since Zhe’ra had caught that brief remnant of Light having been used in St. Petersburg. She was hoping to find it again. To know what it was. No sign here though, only grime and smoke.

1925, Warsaw
After her last remaining descendants had met their end in the revolution, Zhe’ra had needed rest. The world was changing rapidly, becoming unrecognizable to an ancient creature such as her.
Slowly she had made her way south-west from the soviet stronghold. A journey that had taken her far longer than she had estimated. She wanted to forget, wanted to purge the hurtful memories. Everyone died from her. Her loves. Her children. It had been so hard the first time. But her heart wasn’t turned to stone yet. She longed for a connection again. For others like her.
She purchased a ticket to the opera. Watching the lyrical creatures on stage was a solace. Something to transfer her mind away, if just for a moment. The moment shattered when she was rattled by the man in the seat next to hers coughed, then spat straight into his glass – disrupting her calm.
After the performance Zhe’ra headed to her hotel room. Laying in bed she shaped a question in her mind ‘what is the point of power and abilities in a world like this?’ opening herself up to the Light she rested there, in the warm light, with her question circulating in her mind.
Stay vigilant, Zhe’ra, the time will come – for you, your descendant, and many others. The time is nigh.
Zhe’ra sat up in bed, heart jumping with joy in her chest; The Light – it had spoken to her. She had only heard rumors of such an event in her old life. The words warmed her, and she felt truth within them. She would stay strong. She would walk straight onwards. And – a descendant? All her children and lines were dead. Must I endure it again?

She had found herself a lovely furnished rental in the Admiralteyskaya area. Here she was close to the palace, where she could keep an eye on her descendants who now found themselves in the throne. Although she wasn’t in their orbit, she did enjoy the glimpses she could see. Maybe she should get a job in the palace now that the court was quietly reorganizing after the assassination.
A spangle of Light whirred past. For a heartbeat she felt Déjà vu, her mind travelling back to another time for a moment. A trace of Light. Just like in Paris, all those years ago. A new source of Light, she had to follow, even if ticketed just esoteric traces of Light. However, there is something in this trace – a warmth that seems so familiar…
She couldn’t find the source; by the end it led her to the harbor before fizzing out. Bah! One of these days I’ll find the right angle and actually see what it is! She headed toward the winter palace; she had arranged an interview with the head of staff. Let’s see if this life is interesting…
The interview went quickly, they needed staff for the kitchens. Zhe’ra was led through a maze of internal passages, arriving at a kitchen where a buck had been brought in. A feast for the rich. She felt sorry for her lineage. Being born into wealth comes with other obligations. There was no symmetry between privilege and responsibility.
She was introduced, then helped the kitchen staff prepare the meal for that night, under the patronising stare of the head butler. Later, after the royals had eaten and danced the cleaning started. Not until the dark of the moonless night had descended upon the city did she get home.
Sitting by her window she looked to the stars, feeling the slight pull of the other planets hanging in the sky. Saturn was close, Mars and Jupiter further from her current view. Closing her eyes she let the Light fill her, letting her feel the pull more strongly. Relaxing and rejuvenating her after the busy evening.

Zhe’ra had spent a few weeks in Brussels during the Franco-Prussian war, Belgiums neutrality seeming like a safe harbor. Not that she couldn’t survive a war, it’s just that she can help more people from the shadows. She’d continue on to Paris if they could get their act together. Bunch of infuriating puppets…Workers unions and the people were dismantling the old standard after their country’s defeat by refusing to stop the fight. Fools!
That night she found herself in a strange dream. Floating on her back on a lake, the sky a strange shade of blue, reflecting in the water around her. There is something familiar about that sky… on the mountains beyond the tops had a silver sheen of snow, one top resembling an old crone from the side.
She awoke, suddenly homesick again. To the land she left almost four centuries earlier. Her mind staying on the dream for a second too long. Bah, dreamlit whimsy. Shaking her head she set about getting dressed. She’d go downstairs to the café on the corner for breaking her fast.
Sitting at the café enjoying some pastries she flicked through the newspaper. The French communion done? Oh really…. Maybe it was time for her to visit Paris again. She knew there was a train that went right there. Unless the services are overwhelmed now that the war is seemingly over…
Zhe’ra made up her mind. Tomorrow she’d buy a ticket and try the train service. Spend a while in the French capital. Then later I might visit st. Petersburg again. See how my descendants are like these days…

1976 A great grandmother
Zhe’ra yearned to still stay close to her family. But already her character was almost 65 years, recently retired from the hospital. Now, with her grandson expecting a child with his young wife. Zhe’ra wanted nothing more than to reveal who she was, stay active within the family…
It is strange though – my son only begot one son. I wonder if this will be the only child in the next generation? An icy sensation moved through her body. She was onto something, a truth. But how? And how each child came when the parent was still young. Her son was only 42 this year, already a grandfather!
The phone rang; it was the vice-chancellor at her old job ringing. They said that due to a higher number of births than they could safely deal with, if she could come in, just for a few hours.
Feeling awed, yet humble, she donned the default garb of a midwife, Zhe’ra entered the ward, not surprised in the least to be sent straight to the room where her grandson was anxiously walking in circles. He met her eyes, clearly surprised at seeing their dear next-door neighbor here.
“Don’t worry dear,” she said to him. “I’ll deal with the peculiar delicacies of birth, like I’ve done for many years, even bringing you into this world all those years ago.” She winked at him as he visibly relaxed.
The birth was easy and fast; the young mother was strong. The baby boy was healthy and as she cleaned him off and weighed him, she felt for a connection. None. She sighed, then smiled broadly. “You’ve got a healthy child!” The parents relaxed and kissed each other while Zhe’ra placed the boy in their arms. Watching their newborn son, infinite joy in their eyes.
Zhe’ra nonchalantly walked into a closet, after making sure there wasn’t more need for her today. Forming a portal home, she slipped home and went down below to her temple. Another child is born. Why do I feel like something is happening?

2008 visiting Australia
Zhe’ra had finally taken an airplane. Couldn’t imagine why she had waited over a hundred years after their remarkable invention to try. Of course, by now she could travel to most places via portal, so airplanes weren’t strictly necessary. She had never been to Australia or Japan, and the other islands in that region. So, travel by portal wasn’t easy.
Zhe’ra had walked through a portal in the once mighty city of Beijing, and travelled via rail to Hong Kong, where she had boarded a flight bound for Perth. She had so many plans – diving to see the vast undersea world of coral and anemones, talking to the elder people if she got a chance. Their culture seemed remarkable to her, dreamers!
Perth was a sight. Seasonal madness! Santas and blow-up puppets of reindeer and snowmen – and 30° weather under a scorching sun! From up above it looked like a strip of land clinging on by the oceans edge. From down on ground, it looked like a nice city.
Her phone rang; it’s the neighbors! She made her voice old and frail, answering. “Hello?” It was her next-door neighbor, her grandson –though he didn’t know – calling to let her know he’d become a great grandfather that morning, to a healthy baby boy. William they were calling him. She congratulated him on the occasion, saying she’d love to meet the boy once she was back from her vacation.
Zhe’ra continued her walk through Perth, feeling high, like walking in a cloud. A great great grandson! Then she stopped, suddenly saddened while reminiscing of the past… Last time my great great grandson was deposed and murdered. This one. This one I will watch closely.
Returning to the hotel she thought out the rest of her journey, a few days here, another flight to Melbourne, train to Sydney, flight to Tokyo. Then portal back home. A small hope had lit in her chest, warm, unfamiliar, and stubborn. This child was different. I can feel it.

#VSS365 Gratitude #Whistpr Anemone #VSSDaily (not published in time) #…

1863 – Amsterdam
After wandering South America the past two decades, Zhe’ra needed a change of place – and of pace. Standing on top of a place of power somewhere amongst ancient ruins in Bolivia Zhe’ra connected to the One Power and opened a portal to a city she once visited centuries ago. In her mind the site she would emerge had a forest to one side.
With one last regretful look at the magnificent ruins, she stepped through the portal. Almost walking right into a bleak stone building, practically crashing into the very stonework. A man uttered “hrmph” at her, as she feigned innocence and dusted herself off, walking down the street to figure out where she had ended up.
Up ahead she noticed a fire that roared in a tin box in an alley, poor souls requesting a little heat in this egregious cold and darkness. The city looked so different from when she had wandered through it last. She kept walking until she came to a hotel.
She’d rest a while here, check the region out. Then, I shall see where the winds take me.

The first day of walking was hard, she’d been sedentary for too long in that lazy midwestern town. The day quickly got warm enough that she needed to use her abilities to create a cooling wind circulating around her. It worked fine, no body was close enough to see or feel it,
The trek made her recall walking over continents before; across Europe, and eastward beyond deserts and empires. She had walked across much of the world! Still, there are so many places I’ve yet to go. And I still haven’t figured out of my homeland is anywhere to be found. Past or future? Alternate worlds? The answers still eluded her.
Food she had packed enough for the passing over to El Paso at least, and she knew how to siphon water from a cactus. Through the tedious walk she saw signs of life that had perished in the clay and sand of the area. A beak stuck up from the sand, bearing witness to a once great bird meeting its demise in the hot desert.
By noon, the heat was extreme, causing the very air to wobble. For a moment Zhe’ra stopped, baffled by the seeming sight of a mottle-winged fae, flying across the wobbly air in front of her. Sending her awareness out, Zhe’ra found nothing though. Delirium,
She shivered as a snake suddenly slithered by. Not having felt it approach meant it had been resting right where she was about to step, and thus had started moving to avoid her.
Setting up camp she created a portal to the mailbox she had set up in st. Petersburg, to see if there was any news from her family there. Hadn’t checked in a few years. Two letters she found, paper smelling of perfume and dust. One relayed that her grandson had married, one saying the grandson had fathered a baby girl. The girl was to be raised by surrogate parents, being prepared to marry to one of the royal children when she came of age.

1953
He was 19, and engaged! His wife to be seemed like an otherworldly muse, such a beautiful creature, and from a good family too!! Zhe’ra closed the curtain and turned to see herself in the mirror. She appeared as a 35 year old now, the spell that would make it appear as her aging naturally had progressed from mid twenties to mid thirties. just a common woman…
Zhe’ra had taken work in the hospital, helping young women safely deliver their children as a midwife. She wondered if she’d be able to help the young bride-to-be when her time to love a child came…
A memory surfaced, of her last child. He had grown up as a relative to the tsar, and her great granddaughter had married a tsar! Powerful children indeed! Sadly, that line had been killed by the idealistic revolution. Her eyes turned moist at the recollection.
Her young son and his family were having a party tonight, carefully she opened a small portal to peer through. Just as big as an eye, just so she could see. Years ago, she had been invited to tour the building, and she had picked out some areas where such portals could be opened unobstructed. Some nights she just needed a peek, before she retired for the night.
They looked so happy, young and in love; which warmed her heart. Closing the portal, she found herself a new book to bring to bed, thinking she could read a while before sleep took her.
When her head hit the pillow though, a warm light enveloped her, making her feel like the one power had come alive! She found herself standing in the forest under the oddly blue sky once more. It’s been centuries since I’ve had this dream! Behind her was a tree with strange leaves. One leaf was the dice of her upper body!
In the sky above she saw them. In her earlier dreams only one dragon had been visible, she saw him though, he stood out to her, almost with an inner light the others lacked. He turned and looked in her direction. As he turned away from the group he came swooping down towards her. She tu…

1946 Some Midwest Town
Zhe’ra had found herself a nice house just a few doors from where her son lived with his adoptive parents. They didn’t know who she was, and she didn’t intend for them to find out either. But she did want to live nearby for a while. The boy had just turned thirteen now, and looked more and more like her old fling – though neither of them knew about the other. However much she wanted to hug the boy, she knew she couldn’t do that.
The father was an aeroplane pilot, who did long days away with his copilot high up in the sky, so the boy was often alone with his mother, she saw him play ball in the street often. He seemed to have a harmonious life, well balanced and happy.
Sat in her couch, cozied up under a blanket, in the frosty winter night she relaxed. Taking a sip of her tea as she watched the wonderful picture-box, the RCA 630TS she had purchased last month had finally been delivered. It felt like catharsis to finally get her hand on one. Imagine! I can see the whole world from my living room without using the power!
The outrage people displayed when the device was out of stock in her little town had been enormous. People had broken laws and had tried to steal display models. It had been mayhem!
The police had come round after that, with their interrogative tone, trying to figure out what happened. But she had a receipt and couldn’t help them, so they moved on to every other household, trying to find the ones responsible.
Of course, she could still peer through portals - but those were two-way, so she risked being seen by the observed. This was a one-way setup. She could see news without worry – though the news were edited, could be an unreliable narrator!
Staying safe, as people started noticing how she appeared not to age, had led her to stay indoors more wherever she went. The room with the tv was her most treasured now. She was transfixed with modern technology. TV and Radio had changed the world, made it more open.
For tonight…

After a long monotonous walk on dusty roads along the Dnipro river, in the gloomy light of late evening, Zhe’ra saw a glint from the bank up ahead. Coming closer she noticed people sitting around embers of dying fires. Spotting her wary figure, a man came up to the road to meet her.
He asked what a lone maiden were doing out so late in the night. She explained how she had walked from Damascus, headed for St. Petersburg, and how she had thought to see Kyiv in her way. The man explained how they were a Cossack community, having had a gathering. He invited her to join them for the night. Which she graciously accepted. Not long after she found a seat by the embers, someone brought her a bowl of food. She thanked them for the food and ate the stew looking into the incandescent vapor lifting where the humid air met with embers, dispersed into the starry sky above.
Letting go of all worry, she listened to the people around her, shared a version of her story, tracing a line through her life, from being born on the seaside far away, and after a love affair gone wrong she had started walking. Close enough to the truth, if a little condensed.
The next morning, she felt a presence focusing on here: a child was watching her. Zhe’ra smiled at him as she sat up. Sleeping on the ground had never been easy for her, so she felt stiff muscles several places as she moved. Time to move on. She found the man she’d talked to last night and thanked him for the company and enjoyable conversation.
She left the encampment, heading for the city in the distance, hoping to find somewhere to stay awhile there. The last decade or so her mind had been in a rut, slow and focused on the losses she’d endured. It’s time I try to live again, she thought, setting her sight at Kyiv as it emerged in front of her.
