A minimalist art gallery features a large abstract painting in the style of Mark Rothko, with two horizontal blocks of color: dark teal over orange. In front of the painting, sitting on the museum floor just beyond a rope barrier, is a small child. The child wears a light coat with colorful patterns and is fully engrossed in finger-painting on paper. Bright splashes of red, green, yellow, and blue dot the paper, with a palette tray beside her. The scene evokes both innocence and irony, especially in light of a recent real-life incident where a child accidentally damaged a multimillion-dollar Rothko painting in a Dutch museum.
A new contender enters the scene… Should we bubble-wrap the Rothkos, or hand them a brush?
(Inspired by the recent damage to “Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8” at Boijmans Van Beuningen)
