2025 Reading Year End Review

Many thanks to Storygraph and Booktower - infinitely easier than tracking on gsheets ❤️ and I'm always grateful for Libby and my various libraries - having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card!

▪️Goal set was 104 books - passed goal - 220%. 🥳 Read 229 books/audiobooks total. Actually read 2 physical print books! Really got into audiobooks this year - 73 of 229.
▪️No book DNFs (had gotten into the 3rd quarter before finding a true DNF worthy, but by then I had established a Pattern 🙄).
▪️ Generally a very enjoyable reading year - average rating 3.94. 18 5⭐ books.
▪️ 190 different authors. Frequent flyers were Mary Oliver, Martha Wells, Mary Robinette Kowal.
▪️ Most of reading material from Libby, bought 5 books, and a few from Prime Reading/similar.
▪️ 693 fics read (12,644,477 words total 👀) - not including my rotation of god-tier bedtime story rereads. Read in ~30 fandoms - 323 different authors.

After helping redevelop Detroit's Book Tower, firm moves in Detroit — While Christman Company worked on the team that redeveloped the Book Tower, little did they know that they would eventually become a tenant in the historic downtown building. Having outgrown its previous office in the Fisher Building, the construction company made the move to a familiar space inside the historic Book Tower at 1265 Washington Blvd. "We really wanted to be downtown, wanted to be in the heart of the city," said Joe Luther, senior vice president and general manager for Christman's southeast Michigan operations. "(We) started looking for a place that we could either restore ourselves, originally thought we would purchase and restore something. As we continued to look and try to find the right piece, we said, 'Why not the Book Tower that we just finished for Bedrock?'" Christman moved into its new office space three weeks ago, now occupying 10,000 square feet on the second floor. Luther said the construction team practically lived on that floor during the years-long restoration. "Once we realized this was an opportunity for us, we looked no further really," said Mary LeFevre, regional vice president of business development for Christman's southeast Michigan operations. The new space is larger than the firm's previous office in the Fisher Building, which Christman constructed in 1927 and remains involved in its current renovation. The company's previous location on the 26th floor was 6,000 square feet, with about 4,000 square feet of usable office space. Christman continues to expand its footprint and its staff. Over the past decade, the company’s workforce in southeast Michigan has grown from 25 to 110 employees, Luther said. The Detroit office is the largest one for the 130-year-old, Lansing-based company, which has eight regional offices throughout the country. “What necessitated the move was we outgrew the space,” he said. “We had been there 10 years, and we've seen tremendous growth in the last 10 years. Part of the city's comeback. We've been proud to be a part of that. Projects like Michigan Central Station, Little Caesars headquarters, Wayne State school of business. And so as the city has really come back, we've been able to grow along with the city." The company’s expansion to a larger space comes as the office market vacancy rate in Metro Detroit in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 12.6%, a slight increase from the previous quarter, according to Colliers. Christman partnered with Detroit-based Brinker in a joint venture to restore the Book Tower over several years. Bedrock purchased the Italian Renaissance-style building in 2015 and enlisted a team for work that included restoring the original limestone and masonry façade, replacing more than 2,400 historically accurate windows and converting some of the office space into residential units. The building reopened in 2023. In addition to office space on the second and third floors, it houses restaurants, a hotel and residential space. During a recent tour of the second floor, Luther pointed out the fitness center and a flexible co-working space for tenants in the building called The Study. Royal Oak-based HED architects designed Christman's office space. The new tenant is still adding personal touches and awaiting artwork to adorn the walls. "It's a house," Luther said. "We're making it a home." On display in the hallway is the company’s copper cube, which recognizes its project teams in the region. Teams are honored quarterly, and Luther refers to it as the company’s equivalent of the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup. About 25 people, including estimators, schedulers, quality control specialists and executive management, regularly occupy the office space. Others, who included project teams during the pre-construction phase, can make use of hoteling spots and huddle rooms. A light-filled kitchen area known as the parlor has become a popular gathering spot and features a large island where employees like to meet during lunch. The company has already hosted a couple of industry-related events in the space. "It's just great for people to come in here," LeFevre said. "We’ve really created a space where people can socialize. This fits the bill perfectly." Naumann Idrees, Bedrock’s senior vice president of leasing, said it was a natural fit for Christman to move into the Book Tower. "Them working on the building and being part of the process with Book Tower allowed us to form a different level of relationship with them as they looked to seek a different space than they had ..." he said. "It ended up being something that worked very well for both parties." While Idrees did not reveal the building's occupancy rate, he said the firm is in talks with numerous potential tenants for the remaining office space on the third floor. Potential tenants are drawn to Book Tower’s amenities, design and location in the core of the central business district, Idrees said. "We found that that building obviously has resonated very well in terms of that, but just the absolutely gorgeous architecture and restoration of the building, for those who it matters to, companies like Christman, it's been a really, really wonderful attraction point for us." cwilliams@detroitnews.com @CWilliams_DN This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: After helping redevelop Detroit's Book Tower, firm moves in
