A rare and very early design by Chato Castillo for Los Castillo in Taxco - the letter opener is fabricated from heavy gauge sterling silver, and has a geometric design inlay of malachite and black onyx in the handle. The only example of this design that I have seen in my 45+ years collecting the works of the Los Castillo atelier!

An incredible vintage 1950s 60s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and four color 'metales casados' (married metals) Mexican modernist Harlequin geometric design cocktail ring designed by Chato Castillo for Los Castillo of Taxco. Exceptional artistry only accomplished by Los Castillo at the height of their glory in the 1950s and 60s! The ring is sterling silver with a thin layer of four-color metales casados (copper, brass, light and dark silver) laid overtop covering all of the outside surfaces, but the sterling is visible on the inside of the band. The only example of this design that I have seen in my 45+ year career, and without a doubt a one of a kind creation, and designed by Chato who also invented the 'metales casados' metalworking technique among many others over the course of his career in Taxco! Measures 1-1/8" long at top by 15/16" wide, size 10-1/4 to 10-1/2 US, and weighs 15.5 grams total. Marked inside band as shown, "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle above "Mexico". Metales Casados pieces were rarely if ever marked 'sterling" as they involved heaping portions of other metals in the decorative technique. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. As noted above, this is a one of a kind creation designed, and perhaps made by, Chato himself for his family business Los Castillo in Taxco. You'll never see another! Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and wood inlay Mexican modernist hinged bangle bracelet by Los Castillo of Taxco. The only example that I have seen of this design bracelet, and no doubt the original design was by Chato Castillo. Comprised of a box section at top with inlayed ebonized (blackened) wood with a hinged cuff section that pushed open on the side and swings open to put it on and take it off. The box section measures 1-1/2" by 1-1/2" by 1/2" deep, and the cuff section is 1/2" wide at bottom and tapers slightly thinner at the sides. The bracelet will fit up to a 7" wrist comfortably, although I was able to get it on my 7-1/2" wrist snugly, and weighs a hefty 60.4 grams total. Marked as shown, "Los Castillo Taxco", and "Made in Mexico Sterling", both in the 1950s circular marks. Excellent vintage condition.

Constructed of sterling silver with 'metales casados' (married metals) fish inlay (copper), and carved amethyst and rose quartz 'fish' swimming thru sterling underwater plants!
All in a concave rounded triangular shape concave at front recessed like a bowl in which are placed the gemstone 'fish' and over which is laid the sterling wire 'plants'.

Post image Post image From the marks, this brooch could have been made anywhere from 1948 to 1978, but given the design I am guesstimating it to be from the earlier years of that range, most. likely the 1950s. Marked "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle around the Eagle 15 mark, and above "925" for sterling silver, and design number "10". A rare design that I haven't seen before, and a new addition to the collection.

Los Castillo mid-1950s ‘onix negro’ (black onyx) and sterling silver modernist necklace designed by Chato Castillo - Chato created the ‘onix negro’ stone and silver technique in the late 1940s, and though it was much copied by others, none made it better than Los Castillo!
