The nonsensically-named #CongoFreeState was declared on #ThisDayInHistory in 1885. It was the personal possession of #KingLeopoldII of #Belgium. His forces killed (& sometimes ate) up to 10 million people to extract profit, and mutilated millions for failing to meet work quotas.

a grim portrait of King Leopold II composed from torn colonial maps of the Congo, rubber trade ledgers, missionary reports, dismembered hand sketches, and 19th century propaganda posters, his beard formed from chains and ivory fragments, military sash layered from bloodied trade vouchers and missionary letters, background shows ghostly silhouettes of enslaved Congolese laborers and pillaged rainforest scenes, overlay of Belgian royal emblems cracked and fading, conceptual collage with raw, brutal honesty

Delighted that my article exploring the role of race (and racism) in the US relationship with the #CongoFreeState & subsequent ‘humanitarian’ reform movement is now available as first view with Journal of American Studies. Check it out here www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
