A 3D cartoon alien with a round pink face looks forward. It has large green eyes, a small pink nose, bright blue lips, and short orange eyebrow shapes above its eyes. Blue ear-like shapes stick out on both sides of its head. Two thin antennae rise from the top of its head and bend outward, each ending in shiny, speckled spheres. The background is plain light gray.

How do humans learn to weight signals when reasoning about emotions? Children change both kinds of cues they rely on and the ways they use cues in their reasoning. New work from Andrea Stein using adorable stimuli, too. 🧪 dx.doi.org/10.1111/desc... #cogsci #devsci #AffectSci

Learning words in context - Nature Reviews Psychology Nature Reviews Psychology - Learning words in context

Had fun writing this homage to Roy et al., 2015, who demonstrated that language learning is tied to spatial+temporal context. I touch on ecological validity, power, and boldness in study design in dev.psych. A slightly mad study showing just how cool science can be!

Repulsions instruct synaptic partner matching in an olfactory circuit - Nature Transcriptomic screening identifies pairs of cell-surface proteins that mediate repulsive interactions between axons and dendrites of non-cognate partner neurons, thereby contributing to correct synaptic partner matching.

How do neurons know who to connect with and who to avoid? A Nature study shows repulsive signals are as crucial as attraction for wiring the brain’s olfactory circuit. Researchers found three molecular pairs that prevent wrong connections: spklr.io/63324BpubI

New longitudinal study on the ethnic identity development of minoritized kids!

Children’s positive identity-related feelings remained stable, BUT their negative identity-related feelings decreased over time.

Mothers’ cultural socialization predicted this decrease (1/2)

Demonstrates that while preschoolers initially rely on perceptual information from faces, this diminishes with age; the crux of emotional development in children shifts to conceptual knowledge gained through social experience. 🧪
