I awoke at 5:30am today as usual, but when Siri told me sunrise would not be until 7:17am, I had a strong inclination to go back to bed. Yet when my wife and I ventured out a short while later (she’s been joining me on my walks of late), I’m glad I resisted that urge. The fall air was crisp, the starlit sky bright, and the streets all but empty. I always like to think of our neighborhood as our little bubble, but today the bubble felt spacious as well as safe, as if the world was ours to explore. Which of course it is, but there was a strange comfort in that exact moment, away from the noise of the news, the clamor of social media, etc. Just two people, hand in hand, walking through the dim light before the dawn.
