It was never quiet. They had made sure of that, overlaying the community thought so thoroughly that nobody could escape. Nobody knew how to. How could you escape yourself? The neural implants were embedded too deep, and now thoughts of your neighbours tumbled on top of your own, every twitch, every look, analysed, watched, and churned over. We were entangled, churned up in a city cocktail that none of us could escape. Until one carved its way through the hum, called for silence. And we stopped. A whole body of us, waiting for the next word. At last, as the lights fell and our shifts ended, it came, like a shot to our veins. Rebellion.
