Did you know our BTO HQ in Thetford was once a Benedictine monastery founded in King Canute’s time (1016-1035)? The site was then taken over by Benedictine Nuns & was run as a Nunnery until 1537. The oldest existing remains here date back to the late 12th century.

Bethlem was founded as The Priory of the Order of St Mary of Bethlehem in 1247. The Order disappeared from history in the 1300s, but they gave us our name and our first symbol ⭐ Our star pin is inspired by a medieval manuscript recording activities of the Order bit.ly/bethlemstarpin

This deed of King Richard III from January 1485 came to us on deposit earlier this year. It's granting Sir James Tyrell (yes, that one!) the Lieutenancy of Guines Castle in the Marches of Calais. This meant he didn't take part in the Battle of Bosworth. #EYAMedieval

A handwritten document laid out and held down by snake weights. It is written in Latin, in early modern handwriting. It is possibly a land deed.

While most of our archives are from the 19th century onwards, we do have a few older records, including this #EYAMedieval land deed from 1451! It is written in Latin and relates to Ardingly, which is near where our second site Wakehurst is located. #KewLA

For #EYAMedieval, we've chosen the 12th-century Hunterian Psalter, one of the most magnificent manuscripts from William Hunter’s library. Here's a miniature depicting the Ascension (fo. 4r), an intricate initial B (fol 22r), and a singing goat with an ass playing the harp (fol 88r). [MS Hunter 229]

For #EYAMedieval we bring you an illuminated Church manuscript that was re-used c.16th century to bind Whitchurch parish’s ‘Poor Accounts’. After the Reformation, such manuscripts were sometimes given more 'everyday' purposes. Not quite the preservation we'd have suggested but better than the bin...

As part of #EYAMedieval, we have uncovered the oldest item in our collections, a present from a mysterious Mr. R. Hill.

These circa 1904 plans relate to a major restoration project, led by architect Armitage Rigby, intended to return the castle to its 14th Century appearance. #EYAMedieval #ExploreYourArchive #ManxArchives #IsleOfMan
