#OTD in 1944 my uncle Harm perished when #HellShip #Hofuku_Maru was torpedoed and sank off the Philippines by planes of US TF38. Of the 1289 #FEPOW on board, 242 survived this #disaster.

Roy Pagani's story is one of incredible resilience. The only European to successfully escape from the Burma Railway , he attempted a 600-mile trek to India. Captured and tortured, he survived by creating a false identity as a downed American airman.

#OTD 1945, my great uncle, George Henry Hall, was liberated from his POW camp in Thailand. He spent over 3 & 1/2 yrs in cruel captivity & was forced to work on the Death Railway via a few camps,inc Changi, to start with. He was repatriated not long afterwards. Poor sod.

Remembering family on #VJDay80, who were in the Far East, inc my Army Commando grandfather, a great uncle in the SWB's, one in the RAF, plus one as a #FEPOW at the fall of Singapore. With the dropping of the bombs, it cut short their suffering & most probs saved their lives.
