Image of river polluted with brown fertilizer emptying into a bluer sea. Overlaid is a poem and note. The poem and note read: Ecological Dieting Like lavish farmland fertilizer plied deep every year by big Ag lusting more crops, grown out of a land that should have died will bleed and seep to sea from river’s shore, Are diet products, fads and get-thin-quick- now schemes paraded past souls by finessed fakes hocking protein shakes and only chick'n skinned - sparse additions to a taste repressed. The two seem beneficial – one feeds greens, both crops and kelp, the other thins to “norm”. But yearly fertilizer chokes out need- ed air and diets crash by hunger’s thorn. It’s boom and bust – the algae blooms and dies, Just like the diets’ constant cycl'ng tries. Webster defines eutrophication as “the process by which a body of water becomes enriched in dissolved nutrients (such as phosphates) that stimulate the growth of aquatic plant life usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen”
As we think about "resolutions," let's remember that arbitrary confines set by the current ways, society, or even a sonnet's structure are not always (and usually aren't) the best for our individual needs.
