A small open window is all that stands between Sloane and freedom— of one sort or another. There’s an ache in her chest, a tightness that makes her stare out onto the world in these clear early mornings, a longing to throw open the shutters and leap out into that glittering sun-touched world. Maybe she’d soar, her wings carrying her aloft and away, an escape from this tower and this wretched life; but far more likely the delicate, stunted wings folded on her back would fail under her weight and send her plummeting to the ground far below. Either way, she’d be free. Motes of dust dance in the light of the window as her scales scrape against the grey stone beneath her hands. The wind coming down the mountain is flirtatious, pulling at her hair and dancing around her horns. It buffets her face with demanding hands, the air slipping between the tiny scales on her cheeks and forcing her eyes closed. A single step over the stone sill and she’d spend eternity in the wind’s embrace.
