Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz (1936–2021), trailblazing Polish yacht captain who achieved the first female solo global circumnavigation in 1978 on Mazurek, earning her place as a maritime pioneer despite political overshadowing in later years. The black-and-white photograph shows her standing confidently on the deck of her yacht amid rigging and ropes, wearing a dark turtleneck sweater and a patterned headscarf, smiling warmly while holding a radio or some other device to her ear, with sails and mast elements framing the scene in the background.

Color photograph from February 17, 1998, on the ice at the Big Hat arena in Nagano, Japan, capturing the triumphant celebration of the United States women's ice hockey team after winning the inaugural Olympic gold medal in the sport with a 3-1 victory over Canada. The large group poses joyfully together on the rink, wearing their navy blue, red, and white Team USA jerseys with gold medals around their necks, many holding bouquets of flowers and small American flags. Players kneel and stand in multiple rows, some raising one finger in victory, others flashing peace signs or thumbs-up, with goaltender gear visible including large pads and a blocker marked 'LOUISVILLE' on the ice in front. A massive American flag drapes across several players in the center. Behind them, a crowd fills the arena stands, and a row of smiling dignitaries, coaches, officials, and celebrities in suits, ties, casual attire, and winter jackets (including men with Olympic credentials) stand arm-in-arm along the back row. Handmade signs are held up, including one reading 'US WON the real Dream Team' and another with 'US WON' amid flowers. The scene radiates pride, unity, and historic achievement in a packed Olympic venue with blue dasher boards and 'NAGANO' branding visible.
The first year women's ice hockey was a sport in the #WinterOlympics was 1998.
#OTD in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, the United States beat Canada 3-1 to become the first country to win gold in women's ice hockey at the Winter Olympics.

Color photograph from February 2001 documenting the groundbreaking trans-Antarctic expedition by American explorer Ann Bancroft (then 45) and Norwegian explorer Liv Arnesen (then 47), the first two women to ski and sail (using snow kites) across the entire continent of Antarctica. In the foreground, the two women are seen from behind as they ski across a vast, flat, snow-covered expanse under a pale sky, each pulling a heavily loaded ~250-pound sled via harnesses and poles; they wear bright red expedition suits with fur-trimmed hoods, backpacks, and ski gear, with mountains visible in the distant hazy background. In the upper right inset photo, a close-up portrait shows Bancroft and Arnesen smiling warmly together outdoors, both dressed in matching blue jackets, scarves (one red, one blue), and casual pants, sitting side by side with relaxed, joyful expressions against a snowy or mountainous backdrop, celebrating their 94-day, 1,707-mile achievement completed without dogs, motors, or external assistance. #AnnBancroft #LivArnesen #AntarcticaExpedition #WomenExplorers #PolarAdventure

A historic black-and-white photograph capturing the swearing-in ceremony of Indira Gandhi as India's first woman Prime Minister on January 24, 1966. In the center foreground, Indira Gandhi (then 48 years old) stands dressed in a simple yet elegant light-colored sari with a dark border draped traditionally over her shoulder. She holds a document or oath paper in both hands, gazing downward with a composed, focused expression as she reads or recites the oath of office. To her right stands President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, administering the oath. He is an elderly man wearing traditional Indian attire: a light-colored kurta or achkan, a white dhoti or lower garment, and a distinctive large white turban or pagri, with glasses perched on his nose. He holds papers in his hands, looking down attentively at the document. To Indira Gandhi's left is another figure (possibly a dignitary or aide) in a dark uniform or suit with glasses, standing respectfully. In the background, a crowd of onlookers includes men in military or ceremonial uniforms (one with a turban and beard), traditional attire, and others observing the event closely. Microphones and recording equipment are visible to the right. The image conveys a momentous, dignified historical milestone: the ascension of Indira Gandhi—daughter of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
#OTD in 1966, Indira Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister of India—the first and, to date, only woman to hold this position.
She would serve as the PM of India for four terms, from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. #history #firsts

A classic black-and-white close-up portrait of Indira Gandhi, India's first female Prime Minister and a pivotal figure in 20th-century Indian politics. She is shown from the shoulders up, gazing slightly off-camera with a warm, gentle smile that conveys confidence and approachability. Her short, neatly styled graying hair is swept back, framing her face. She wears a dark blouse or sweater topped with a patterned saree (traditional Indian garment) draped elegantly over one shoulder, featuring intricate floral or paisley motifs in the visible pallu. The soft lighting highlights her expressive eyes and composed expression, set against a neutral indoor background with subtle curtain folds visible behind her, giving the photo a timeless, formal yet intimate feel typical of portraits from the 1960s or 1970s.
#OTD in 1966, Indira Gandhi was elected India's Prime Minister. She is the first and, to date, only female PM of India.

A black-and-white historical photograph of Jane Bolin, the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the United States. She is seated formally at a judge's bench, facing the camera with a calm and composed expression. Her dark hair is neatly styled and pulled back. She wears a short-sleeved, dark polka-dot dress with a V-neck collar. In her right hand, she holds a pen poised over a document on the desk, while her left arm rests beside it. A wooden gavel lies to her left on the bench. Behind her is a large, high-backed leather chair with studded trim, and the setting conveys the authority of a courtroom environment.
In 1939, Jane Bolin became the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the US.
Bolin was also the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School & to join the NYC Bar Association & the NYC Law Department. She died #OTD in 2007. #history #firsts #law
A vintage black-and-white composite photograph honoring Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first woman governor in the United States. On the left, a three-quarter portrait shows her in early 1920s formal attire: a dark coat with a large fur collar, a white rose corsage pinned to her lapel, and a close-fitting hat with decorative elements, gazing to her right with a calm, confident expression. On the right, a tilted newspaper clipping features the bold headline "THE FIRST WOMAN GOVERNOR" followed by "Wyoming's Governor / THE WOMAN WHO MADE GOOD," with a smaller inset oval portrait of Ross wearing a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a bow, and a long pearl necklace; below the portrait, text reads "Businesslike—Able—Courageous. She Has Earned Re-election."

Detail of lacework joining up with double ribbing.
Hand knitted cardigan with lacework up the front.
For #showmeyourknits #firsts this was the first cardigan I made myself (a long time ago!) and felt really pleased. The only quibble I had was the way the double ribbing joined the lacework but now I see that the pattern has been updated with single ribbing and it looks much nicer. Link in comments.
Close up picture of baby, heathered red handknit socks laying on a wooden table. Knit from Melinda Goodfellow’s #29 Classic Socks - baby, child & adult pattern https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/29-classic-socks--baby-child--adult-socks
Picture of person looking towards the left wearing a knitted cowl, close up between ear and sternum to focus on the cowl. The yarn is made with a mix of red, light tan with some metallic thread. The cowl has a series of loose cables running vertically with ribbing on top and bottom. It’s very symmetrical.
Portrait of a woman on an icy lake, very white background with a few out of focus trees on the upper right of the frame. It feels very cold. Woman is standing center and facing the right with a knitted wrap draped in layers around her head and neck. The fabric is mainly a deep purple shade with broken lines of bright yellows, reds, pinks and lighter purple colors in a pattern that gradually gets denser towards one end. This is a test knit made for Rastus Hsu’s Skylar Cowl pattern. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/skylar-cowl-2
