As much as I love the aesthetics of the Kodak Retina, I’m struggling to make pictures I care about with it. I’ve got about 4 I like in as many rolls. Meanwhile the medium format Hapo is like a 50% hit rate haha.

A white horse looks at the camera from across a wire fence in the afternoon sunlight. The left 1/3 of the frame is blank because the photographer goofed up loading the camera.

This is what happens when you goof the loading on your Hapo 66e, you run out of film before you run out on the counter. Neat 2/3 of a photo of Blake the horse though.

A vintage air cooled Maico motocross bike sits in a band of sunlight inside a greenhouse. Unlike modern motorcycles these racing two strokes had huge air cooled cylinders with the exhaust sneaking underneath the frame to exit near the rear wheel. The bodywork is pale yellow and made of a mixture of plastic and fiberglass. The gas tank is handmade from aluminum and has a beautiful brushed raw metal finish highlighted by the afternoon sun. This particular bike is in exceptional condition having recently been restored and is currently in storage before going back on display in the owners collection. The photographer would have loved to take it for a ride, but these things are so notoriously loud everybody within a couple of miles would have known what she was up to ha ha.

A derpy looking graffiti face looks out from the broken retaining wall in a gravel parking lot on first hill in Seattle. The photographer uses this spot for a lot of gear tests, so you will probably see it again.

More Hapo test shots. The shooting workflow is a little different with an uncoupled rangefinder. Makes it easy to prospect for images without the hassle of opening the camera.

A very light-leaky test shot from the first roll through my Hapo 66e folding camera. This huge light leak turned out to be a very tiny missing rivet near the base of the bellows. Gaff tape to the rescue!

The photographers Hapo 66e folding medium format camera sits closed on a desk top next to a single roll of Kodak Portra 400 color film. The Hapo is an uncoupled rangefinder, meaning you have to manually transfer the focus distance from its built in optical range finder to the lens adjustment. This adds an extra step but saves a lot of weight so it’s a great pocket camera despite the larger film size. This photographer purchased this one for a massive bargain because it had a tiny light leak which she fixed with a piece of gaffers tape, which can probably fix anything.
