Monroe woman, 47, identified as victim struck in I-75 traffic A woman who died after running onto Interstate 75 on Monday evening in Monroe County was identified Tuesday as a 47-year-old Monroe woman. Authorities said the woman exited her vehicle after a gunshot rang out in the area. She had been waiting in her white BMW after becoming stranded on the roadside and providing her information to a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agent. At about 8:28 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to southbound I-75, near Luna Pier (Exit 6), in Erie Township, the First District of the MSP said on X. State police said a CBP agent had stopped there to check on the motorist. After obtaining her information, the agent returned to his vehicle. A CBP spokesperson said the agent was waiting for roadside assistance to arrive when he "heard what sounded like a gunshot." The agent returned to the BMW and found that the driver had exited it, MSP reported. The woman ran onto the expressway just south of where the vehicle was stopped and was struck by a passing vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. MSP had reported Monday that the CBP agent saw "a possible subject running from the area of the vehicle into the woods" immediately after he heard the gunshot. Authorities said K-9 units and drones were used to search the area but no subject was located. CBP made no mention of a person running into the woods in its statement to The Detroit News. The agency declined to answer questions about the incident, including why a CBP agent responded to the scene, whether the incident may have been connected to an ongoing investigation and who may have fired the gunshot. "Our deepest condolences go out to the motorist’s family during this difficult time," CBP said Tuesday in a statement. It directed additional question to MSP, which is leading the investigation. A spokesperson for MSP's First District did not immediately respond to a request for further information. MSP reported on X on Tuesday night that, "Following an exhaustive review, investigators believe that no additional parties were involved in the incident" and that the woman was the lone occupant in the vehicle. MSP said there was no danger to the public. Authorities have not identified the woman by name and MSP said the incident remains under investigation. Woman fleeing gunshots on I-75 in Monroe Co. fatally struck attempting to cross road A driver was struck by passing traffic after exiting her vehicle while fleeing gunshots on Interstate 75 in Monroe County on Monday night, police said. The crash happened on southbound I-75 near Luna Pier (Exit 6) at about 8:28 p.m., Michigan State Police from the Monroe Post said on X. A Customs and Border Patrol agent had stopped to help the motorist, who appeared stranded, police said. After taking her information, he headed back to his vehicle. Moments later, a gunshot was heard and a male ran from the area into nearby woods. "It is not known at this time if the male subject came from the vehicle, or if he fired the shot," the post said. Grand River, I75, Michigan Ave, Jefferson, and Dixie Hwy are all roads which partially or mostly follow these trails designed by migratory Natives.
