At Braeside Park in Melbourne I witnessed a fight between a Straw-necked Ibis and an Australian Magpie. Usually when birds get into a tiff, it's over in seconds and they go their separate ways. But these two were going at it for five minutes. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingMelbourne #ibises #magpies

🌍🌏🌎 Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) The Glossy Ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a long, decurved bill and glossy feathers. From a distance, it appears dark, but in good light, its plumage shimmers with iridescent green, purple, and bronze. It has a widespread distribution, found in warm regions across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, favoring wetlands like marshes, swamps, and flooded fields. This is a highly social species that forages in flocks, often probing mud and shallow water for invertebrates. Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València, Spain 2022. - image: Michel Meijer This photograph is from a photo series on rice cultivation in València's Albufera. This photo project falls under the broader theme of cultural landscapes. By using photos and text, I show what people do with the landscape they live in and its effects on the landscape. The documentaries are meant to be registrations, telling and showing what happens and how something functions. Human activities in the Albufera are at odds with nature in the area. Many animal and plant species are disappearing due to agriculture, fishing, hunting, industry, tourism and urbanisation. Since the people have realised that a clean living environment and high biodiversity also have great benefits for humans, they are committed to protecting the flora and fauna in the Albufera. As the interests of different parties are often conflicting, this is a difficult and long-term process. Nevertheless, people are increasingly managing to make their activities less harmful to the natural habitat.

🌎 American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) The American white ibis is a medium-sized wading bird. Adults are entirely white, except for black wingtips (visible in flight), with a long, down-curved, reddish-orange bill and reddish-orange legs. Juveniles are mottled brown and white. They are found along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States, south through Central America, the Caribbean, and into northern South America, inhabiting coastal marshes, wetlands, and mangrove swamps. Highly sociable, American white ibises feed and roost in large flocks, often probing shallow water for crustaceans and insects.
