Screencap eBay listing (I have blocked the seller's name since they might not realize the problem). Photo is close-up of a 1971 Eisenhower dollar coin, lower part of portrait. Listing: "1971-S Eisenhower "IKE" Dollar Circulated #2 No Mint Mark". I can't see a mint mark (see how to find it in the other photo). Those marks are usually visible even on most circulated coins. This suggests it was minted in Philadelphia. Problem is, no silver Ikes were struck there -- only in San Francisco. And a few accidental ones in Denver when the wrong shipment of blanks was delivered, in 1974 and 1977, not 1971. It's been more than 40 years and nobody's reported any silver Ikes from Philly. It's theoretically possible, but more likely that the seller's mistaken.

Photo of edges of a stack of Eisenhower dollars. The top two are real silver (40%). The bottom three are "clad" (copper in between nickel-copper alloy layers). Note that over time, all the metals will gradually darken, but the silver should be uniform grey/black, without a streak of coppery colour. This is true for dimes, quarters, and half-dollars too.

A little PSA -- I'm seeing lots of eBay listings for 40% silver US 1$ coins. Please be cautious because some issues have both base and silver versions, hard to tell apart in pics. For example, this seller claims it's silver though there's no mint mark for SFO. #Numismatics #USCoins #silver #Ikes
