Kanazawa Day 3:

A visit to the old neighbourhood. It was good to be back, but so much has changed about the area, and us. One of those times of your life you can revisit but never truly get back.

Oh, and we checked into a hotel staffed by dinosaurs. 😁

A redraw of that Gru with the clipboard meme but it's me:

Panel 1: I have rubbing my hands together with a devious expression "Create activity that students can do on their own without ALT's (Assistant Language Teacher's) help.

Panel 2: I am twiddling my fingers now, absolutely devilish look "Make practicing with the ALT completely optional"

Panel 3: I am laughing maniacally "Students practice with the ALT all period."

Panel 4: My expression falls. "Students practice with the ALT all period."

Me when an elementary school lesson doesn't go well:

The "Which Button do I Press" meme. The buttons are "Teach authentic English" or "Teach English that passes tests" and the guy choosing is labeled "The ALT (Assistant Language Teacher)" It is an eternal struggle for English teachers in Japan.

To celebrate my first day of my new ESL job, have some comics and memes I made from when I taught English in Japan.

Panel 1: Me as an assistant language teacher “Teaching the word ‘cook’ for the first time” - “It’s fiiiine! It can’t be THAT hard!”

Panel 2: Me folding my arms “if it IS hard, we’ll just practice!”

Panel 3: me in front of a class of Japanese 6th graders while holding a vocab card with the word “cook” - “Ok guys… what’s THIS?”

Panel 4: All of the kids yell “COCK” while my face shrivels in abject horror.

“Balls? Balls! How many balls? One, two, three, four… five balls!

Strokes? Strokes! How many strokes? One, two, three, four… five strokes!” -- a genuine real chant taught in an English textbook for 3rd graders in Japan

A manga style page introducing local Yamagata Prefecture festivals. The center of the page is a silhouette of Yamagata prefecture, with the title “Yamagata Charm - What to do, what to see, what to discover.”

The top left box features Akagawa Fireworks and humanized versions of the Akagawa City mascots. Top right is the Obanazawa Hanagasa festival and Obanazawa mascot. Bottom left is the Snow Lantern Festival and the Yonezawa mascot. Bottom right is the Yamagata City Imoni festival and the Yamagata city mascot.

I have all these books for learning #Japanese, most of which I barely used. Books (esp. the ones I got here in #Japan) are awful for learning languages. And yet, I struggle to throw them away. Only exception is maybe the #JETProgramme series because of all the cultural tid-bits.

Google Podcasts is no longer available

A very enjoyable episode that touches upon many of my interests in #Japan. In the second half there are lots of good ideas for current students studying #Japanese and those finishing off being on the #JETProgramme.
