A striking vintage 1980s handmade hand fabricated mixed metals pewter bronze and copper geometric post-modernist box by acclaimed American artist/metalsmith Jon Michael Route of Wisconsin. Entirely handmade likely a one of a kind object with hinged lid decorated in a geometric design with copper and bronze sections, and with black velvet-lined interior. Really a work of art that has a practical use as well!
This outstanding post-modernist box measures 6.25" across by 3-1/8" by 1-1/8" tall at edges. It weighs 380 grams or about 13.5 ounces total prior to packing. Marked at bottom as shown, "Pewter" with the copyright symbol, and "Jon Michael Route" underneath. I haven't attempted to polish this box leaving that decision up to the new owner. Excellent vintage condition.

He is a 1998 recipient of a Wisconsin Individual Artist Fellowship and one of his pewter teapots was featured in Metalsmith Magazine’s 2001 “Exhibition in Print”.
Route’s work was chosen in 2001 to be included at the American Craft Museum in New York in an exhibition entitled “Objects for Use: Handmade By Design”, and the accompanying book published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Paul Smith, Director Emeritus, American Craft Museum, and General Editor. In 2006, Jon was invited to participate in an exhibition honoring the 28-year teaching collaboration between Fred Fenster and Eleanor Moty in the University of Wisconsin, Madison Art Metals program, organized by the Chazen Museum of Art, U-W Madison, Wisconsin, and at an exhibition at the West Bend Art Museum entitled “Time For A Nice Cuppa: Wisconsin Teapots”, in West Bend, Wisconsin. In 2009 Jon was invited by the Charles Allis Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to exhibit a retrospective of his work in his first solo museum show entitled, “For the Love of Metal”.

An incredible piece by Jon Michael Route, the Man in the Moon Teapot in mixed metals - copper, brass, pewter - I love everything about it! The mismatched legs, the extravagant handle and finial, the use of different colored metals - a true museum piece!
