I'm Fox, and I always end up writing about the human element in my spec-fic stories.
Case in point: lately I've been focusing on a superhero story, but it glosses over their fighting villains and instead focuses on how their powers and heroism affect their personal lives.
#LateNightWrite Hmmm. Not really. My characters are pretty much all in positions of great, but not supreme, power. They're learning to wield it properly. Society does not expect *good* from them, and they are changing that.
#LateNightWrite Well...the MC is haunted by his progenitor's ghost. The progenitor was killed in a coup two years before the story starts. The political shift doesn't die down easily, and they're all still working on it throughout the story.

Some of my books have a "small scale" setting but not all. In some, one character's actions can change the fate of an entire country or species. But usually, not on their own! My stories put more emphasis on collective action vs. individual heroics.

In my angry children's book the eponymous child character has to navigate all of the current hellscape as a POC child with an immigrant parent who sought asylum. It's naturally pretty traumatic. #latenightwrite

Good question! I think this really hits home for Micah from Sweet & Wild. In his old town, Steephall, he didnβt fit in. He wasnβt a part of the community and because of that (among other things) he is forced to leave town in a traumatic way. He carries that pain with him.
Since characters in my series often affect their political landscape, yesβboth The Protector and the Annihilation and the WIP yuri mech series have main characters vying for positions in society that rid the world of incoming monsters borne of humans' fears. #LateNightWrite bsky.app/profile/blac...
#LateNightWrite Rae has been groomed from a young age to fulfill a prophecy that she later learns is just a huge fucking delusion, she's harmed innocents in the process, and she is still expected to fulfill the role because of the collective belief in it. Traumatized doesn't begin to cover it.
