The Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove (so called because its red breast feathers look like it has been stabbed in the heart). It is extant to the Philippines but is primarily found on the island of Luzon (but also Polippo and Catanduanes -extremely rare in the latter); the favoured habitat includes primary and secondary forest. Much of the population is fragmented due to deforested and cultivated land. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List with a decreasing population trend. Other negative effects include mining, hunting and trapping and road kill. It can be found from 0-1400 metres above sea level. This species feeds on berries, seeds and invertebrates on the ground. It usually occurs singly or in pairs. There are three subspecies.

This Luzon heart dove individual was particularly tame and took a fondness for me (I did not feed it). Perhaps it had be hand reared. Details of this species are in the ALT text of the first photo.

Were Humans in the Philippines 709,000 Years Ago? No. Modern humans (Homo sapiens) were not in the Philippines 709,000 years ago. Evidence from the Kalinga site on Luzon shows that hominins, likely a premodern human species, butchered a rhinoceros there about 709,000 years ago using simple stone tools, but the species is unknown and was almost certainly not Homo sapiens (Ingicco et al., Nature 2018). Homo sapiens did not evolve until roughly 300,000 years ago…
