Markarian's Chain - telescope processed image. It is a string of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster that appears to lie along a smooth, curved line when viewed from Earth.

Here’s an image I just completed of Markarian’s Chain. Not a whole lot of color variation in this galaxy cluster but the sheer abundance of galaxies in such a compact region is still quite impressive!

Markarian's Chain - unprocessed image. Markarian's Chain consists of at least eight galaxies that appear to follow a smooth, curved arc through the heart of the Virgo Cluster. The string begins at its western end with the two large, bright elliptical galaxies M84 and M86, which serve as the "anchor" of the group. Following the curve eastward, you encounter the famous "Eyes Galaxies," a pair of interacting systems known as NGC 4435 and NGC 4438. The chain then continues through a series of smaller elliptical and lenticular galaxies, including NGC 4461 (paired with NGC 4458), NGC 4473, and finally NGC 4477 at the northernmost tip.

Last observation from the morning was a new viewing of #MarkariansChain. So amazing to learn about this area of multiple galaxies. Created an image with markups of the galaxies visible in this area. The lettering in bold purple are the main members of […]

Here is my highlight of the morning. It was about 7 hours I go that I learned of #MarkariansChain. This collection of galaxies is a centerpiece of the Virgo Cluster. Because these galaxies are physically close to one another, they offer a rare chance to see […]

Markarian’s Chain in Virgo: a graceful arc of elliptical and spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, ~50–60 million light-years away—featuring M84, M86, and the “Eyes” pair NGC 4438/4435.

A stunning image of Markarian's Chain, a string of galaxies within the Virgo Cluster. The image, a small section of the "Big Picture" mosaic from the Samuel Oschin Telescope, showcases prominent galaxies M84 and M86, along with several spiral galaxies. The Virgo Cluster, the nearest cluster to our own, is home to over 2,000 galaxies and exerts a significant gravitational influence on the Local Group. This image will soon be featured as a mural at the renovated Griffith Observatory.
