One reason I love to teach is I learn so much fr my Ss. In #mathisfun Stanford #mathCircle, we've been working almost the whole quarter on integer partitions & found a recurrence relation; I shared a motivation using by-parts vs largest-part but several found another explanation! #mtbos #iteachmath

Each of my students is amazing. A 1st grader was 1st to start w/what I'll soon intro as Young Diagrams&key point re:rotations/refls. She also easily solved breaking 100->10s, 20s,...,100. This wk hmwk is based on another 1st grader's key observ re:partition sums. Wow! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathCircle

Another nice meal at all #vegan Wildseed in Palo Alto, including meeting the manager, Augie, who worked with me to plan Monday’s dinner for 50! At today’s lunch I met my #mathCircle manager and several fellow teachers! #mtbos #iteachmath

What a #mathisfun #mathcircle we had thus morning at UNC. We explored ‘Christmas Numbers’ or the number of gifts given in #twelveDaysOfChristmas . It was a big group with lots of new children! I excerpted from my handout Mathinst.com/christmas . #mtbos #iteachmath

(shared with kind permission of student and his family) My amazing 2nd grade student Luc last year had made with Legos(R) a 9-row 70-high #PascalsTriangle; what a lesson to me about visualizing just how big numbers really are. This week: 10 rows, 126 high! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #mathCircle

I get such amazing students. I'm looking over the last homework for my 1st and 2nd graders at Stanford #mathCircle - one of my 1st graders ended her assignment with, "I will miss you Mr. Barman" - I sure will miss her & the others, hoping they'll all return in the winter quarter! #mtbos #iteachmath

Stanford Math Circle Winter 2026. The Stanford Math Circle offers quarter-long sessions for elementary, middle, and high school students interested in math. Sessions are held weekly online for grades.

Registration for winter Stanford #mathCircle is almost over; I think there are a few spots left in my 1st/2nd grade. If you have a 1st or 2nd grdr who wants exposure to #mathisfun topics (I'll be covering integer partitions), join us! We meet Tu or W 4:30-5:30 or 5:45-6:45 PT Jan 13/14-Mar 17/18.

(shared w/permission of student & family) This 2nd grader in my #mathCircle shows a unique way of seeing the strength of the triangle - by blowing! In class we remembered the classic "The Three Little Pigs" story. I love my students' creativity, curiosity, & engagement! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I get great students. I'm reviewing #mathCircle homework fr 1st & 2nd graders; a parent wrote, "Kabir was super motivated to finish the homework...we loved seeing that - its [sic] a testament to how engrossed [he is] ... gratitude...for keeping math fun and interesting" #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

Skier and snowboarder pull off 2340 trick for the first time
Skier and snowboarder pull off 2340 trick for the first time YouTube video by Guardian Sport

A 1st grader in #mathCircle shared her skiing expertise lingo like "3” for 360deg turn, “7” 720deg & “10” 3 turns. She sent youtube.com/watch?v=DNlPnAnWvq0 re:records made in Jan. by snowbrdr Hiroto Ogiwara & skier Miro Tabanelli - world's 1st “2340” - 6 1/2 turns! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathAndSports

It's remarkable how many math concepts these young learners seem to absorb. In #mathCircle the goal is exposure not mastery and I can only imagine when these children become middle and high schoolers how much easier they will understand math they're now intuitively experienced. Future math leaders!

My Stanford #mathCircle 1st/2nd grade Ss have done a great job w/counting diagonals in polygons. Some have used combinatorics & cool algebra tricks like adding n-n=0 to recraft an equation. They cite each other too! What amazing students I have! mathinst.com/diagonals #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

We had a lot of #mathisfun in our 1st-3rd grade #mathCircle looking at angles & seeing angles of a triangle add to 180deg. We discussed why we use 360 instead of a power of 10 to measure angles and talked a bit about #historyOfMath and zero. One student made their own protractor! #mtbos #iteachmath

I'm looking forward to today's #mathCircle at UNC (ironically later is a football game UNC vs Stanford and I teach for both math circles!) where 1st-3rd graders will explore angles and using a protractor - we'll have an angle lesson for Stanford classes this week too. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

One of my 1st graders at Stanford #mathCircle used a clever representation of n-gons to denote modulo n numbers. He then used the same reprs. to answer questions like what day of week it is 706 days from now. I'm proud and delighted about his intuitive and powerful representation! #mtbos #iteachmath

I love the nice comment a 1st grader's parent just sent! I love giving esp. my #mathCircle students challenging #mathisfun concepts to probe. Then as I was writing this a 2nd again unsolicited comment from another 1st grade parent came in! There's so much to do w addition! #mtbos #iteachmath

I love sharing w/students #mathisfun techniques for easily subtracting & am integrating several ways for students to try on a unit I'm calling "Fun with Subtraction" this weekend at Chapel Hill Math Circle for 1st-3rd graders. I hope to finalize the handout tomorrow. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathCircle

I get such motivated/smart/engaged students. This week in 1st/2nd grade Stanford #mathCircle we're looking more at counting - salads, ice cream bowls, & clothing combinations. Few examples: one had a nice tree, another understood abstracting w/variables, two had trees w/drawings. #mtbos #iteachmath

Today in Chapel Hill #mathCircle we played with coins and looked for #mathisfun patterns in, for example, counting ways to make $1 with quarters, dimes, and nickels - and, for homework, pennies. As we move toward a cashless society, some kids are missing out of math with coins. #mtbos #iteachmath

I loved working with my Stanford #mathCircle 1st and 2nd graders on counting ways to make change and subtracting 3s and 5s from 20, so am using these problems for my UNC Chapel Hill #mathCircle 1st-3rd graders this Saturday - should be #mathisfun! I get such great students! #mtbos #iteachmath

In Stanford 1st/2nd grade #mathCircle a student counted ways to make $1 w/quarters&dimes w/fractions! We discussed counting population; 1 more noticeable immed for village of 42 but not for a city; in parent notes I shared about data visualization @visualcap.bsky.social #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I'm so impressed w/my Stanford #mathCircle 1st & 2nd graders. One question due this wk is finding the (non-negative integers) nums you can get by subtracting any num of 3s/5s from 20. Several came up w/nice graphical solns and one reused ideas fr Frobenius Coin Problem! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I'm excited the fall quarter of my #mathisfun 1st & 2nd grade #mathCircle at Stanford Univ. began last week. We're currently working on counting; I'm delighted that one child did an optional problem and found all 242 ways to make $1 with quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies! #mtbos #iteachmath

We had good #mathisfun this AM at Chapel Hill #mathCircle continuing 1st-3rd graders exploring counting diagonals in polygons. We looked at the ‘lazy mayors’ way (every city builds additional roads - mayors don’t coordinate to avoid duplication) after reviewing n-3, n-3 countdown #mtbos #iteachmath
