Happy #MicroscopeMonday with π§ and π« from a bobcat! This bobcat was diagnosed with highly pathogenic avian influenza: π§ has lymphohistiocytic encephalitis with neuronal necrosis and π« has interstitial pneumonia with alveolar edema and a thrombus in that vessel in the middle. Classic HPAI in a Felid!
Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft a bat wing with Pseudogymnoascus destructans aka the fungal agent that causes White Nose Syndrome. This fungal agent has wiped out large colonies of bats within North America in the last twenty years. It was introduced from Europe by spelunkers in the early 2000s. π¦π¦π¦π¦

Parasites are not uncommon in Wildife and it is important to discern if it is a problem or not. In this case, there does not appear to have been weight loss nor damage to the intestine so they are incidental.

In bats affected with white nose syndrome, we would look for the fungal causative agent, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, in the wing membranes and grade the level of damage affecting them! Big brown bats can be resistant!

Kalanchoe marnieriana is a facultative cloning plant, which normally does not produce plantlets but do produce plantlets when leaves are detached.
Happy #MicroscopeMonday π¬with ranavirus in a barred tiger salamander spleen! There is necrosis with characteristic eosinophilic inclusion bodies! This disease is caused by multiple different viruses π¦ ; this one is likely Ambylostoma Tigris virus causing mass mortalities in N. American salamanders!
Happy #MicroscopeMonday π¬with renal coccidiosis in a juvenile snow goose πͺΏ! Most likely an Eimeria species, this parasite has a complicated life cycle to the kidneys. Typically, this is asymptomatic but heavy parasitism can cause death is due to renal failure.

Happy #MicroscopeMonday! See the little parasite in this 𦦠π§ ? Itβs tiny; likely a Sacrocystis neurona or Toxoplasma gondii! Can be difficult to distinguish histologically without molecular or staining techniques! Both can cause severe fatal meningoencephalitis in southern sea otters! 𦦠π¬

Sarcocystis sp. are relatively common in wildlife species with variability on mortality. Can be deadly if the animal is immunosuppressed and migrates to the brain π§ causing severe inflammation and necrosis.

I work on H. tubulosa, but this tiny H. poli turned up in a lab mate's samples and is now our lab mascot - at least until a tubulosa appears π

Pigmented macrophages are a common cell type seen in reptiles, amphibians, and fish! Pigmented macrophage hyperplasia is extremely common in geriatric reptiles but could be seen with immune stimulation.
Very delayed #MicroscopeMonday but presenting the Epigonal organ of a freshwater ray!
Epigonal organ is a particular organ of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) that is associated lymphoid and reproductive function!
It is attached to the ovary or testes of the cartilaginous fish! π¦

This is an acid-fast cytology stain highlighting acid-fast bacilli consistent with Mycobacteria species!
Many of this genus affect fish particularly in the M. marinum group!

A small round structure. In the centre are red blobs which are red blood cells in the lumen. Roughly circular around the lumen are a spiral arrangement of elongated purple blobs, the nuclei of smooth muscle fibers. Around the outside are orange fibrous structures, the connective tissue surrounding the blood vessel. The rest of the field are filled with orange-pink wisps, the remains of the cell membranes of fat cells.
A small artery imbedded in adipose tissue.
