A striking vintage 1980s 90s one of a kind signed handmade sterling silver geometric modernist pendant on chain necklace. Really a great design and entirely handmade! Hand fabricated and formed from solid sterling silver sheet that has been oxidized and etched to produce bright contrasting strips inside the pendant body as shown. The pendant measures 3/4" long by 5/8" wide, and hangs on a 17" marked sterling silver chain from Italy. Total weight for the necklace is 7.1 grams. Hand etched markings are impossible to make out clearly, although I can see what looks like a maker mark that I can't decipher, and "925" for sterling silver. In any case it's an outstanding entirely hand crafted piece of wearable modernist art jewelry! Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver modernist dimensional design necklace by Puig Doria of Spain. An incredibly rare and early creation by one of the most important Spanish silversmiths of the post-war period! I've had many pieces by Puig Doria over the years, but this is the first and only example of this necklace design that I have run across in my 45+ year career! Jose Maria Puig Doria (1926-2006), was born in Barcelona, Spain. He started his business in 1948 on Provenza street in Barcelona, and specialized in modernist sterling jewelry, and later added gold jewelry and precious objects to his repertoire. His career spanned decades, and his contributions to the art and design industries in Spain are immeasurable! (See my last photo of the artist circa 1990.) This superb modernist necklace measures 28" wearable length, and simply slips over the head and is without a closure. Measures about 1-1/8" widest, and weighs 87 grams total. Marked on one link as shown, "Puig Doria" and "925" for sterling silver quality. Very comfortable to wear, lays flat and stays there, and makes quite a statement! From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her career in publishing, and collected unusual and interesting pieces of wearable art along the way. She purchased this necklace in Spain during her years working and living in Europe. This necklace would look amazing on either a man or a woman! Excellent vintage condition.

A fantastic vintage 1940s 50s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and copper abstract biomorphic modernist pendant. An intricate incredibly unique piece of mid century modernist wearable art jewelry! Complex design with a bar across the top from which hang three rows of cutout shapes in sterling silver that are all attached at backs with copper wire that runs the length of each row. A sort of modernist jewelry 'Rorschach' test that could be interpreted a number of ways. Biomorphic forms are abstract shapes, patterns, or designs inspired by living organisms and natural structures, using fluid, curving lines that suggest plants, animals, or body parts, breaking away from rigid geometry to evoke nature's organic qualities and dynamism in art, architecture, and design. Biomorphic jewelry design is a 20th century phenomenon especially from about 1940 to the 1960s. Measures 2.75" tall by 1.75" widest, and weighs 10.7 grams total. Unmarked, and I'm certain it was originally purchased in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that would have been lost over the years. Could be worn on a chain, a black cord, or a neck ring depending on the wearer. I can provide a black cord at no extra charge if desired, just let me know when making the purchase. From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her job in the publishing industry, and who acquired the bulk of her collection in the 1950s/60s/70s eras. Excellent vintage condition.

An unusual and very rare vintage 1950s signed handmade sterling silver Mexican modernist necklace with matching earrings designed by Reveriano Castillo for his workshop Reveri. Entirely handmade statement necklace constructed of solid sterling silver by this talented Taxco silversmith and designer! In 1952 he and his wife Maria opened their workshop Reveri, and they were in business until the early 1990s. This is an early and outstanding example of the best of their mid-century modernist design! The necklace measures 16” wearable with a drop at front of 2-1/4”. The earrings measure 1-1/2” by 3/4”. The set weighs 36.4 grams total.
The pieces are marked as shown, “Reveri Sterling Taxco Made in Mexico” along with the Eagle 40 and design number 188. Excellent vintage condition.

A unique vintage 1970s signed handmade electroformed sterling silver dimensional geometric design brooch. Entirely handmade hand carved then electro formed sterling silver geometric brooch that is dimensional almost 3D! Possibly a one of a kind piece of vintage modernist wearable art! Electroformed jewelry is created by using an electrical current to deposit a layer of metal, often copper, onto a non-metallic object, like a leaf, crystal, or wax form. This unique process results in distinctive, lightweight, and intricate hollow metal pieces that can be polished or left with a raw, organic look. The technique allows jewelers to create durable, statement pieces with the appearance of solid metal but with a significantly lighter weight than traditional casting. This brooch measures 2.5" long by 1.5" widest point, and weighs 12.6 grams total. Hand etched signature at back that looks to me like "Alan Hughes" and "925" for sterling silver. I have no further information about the maker, but obviously a technically proficient craftsman, and a talented designer! Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare vintage 1950s handmade 'metales casados' (married metals) sterling silver brass and black onyx inlay Mexican modernist Face design letter opener/knife designed by Stella Popowski in Taxco. Popowski was a Polish jewish emigre who fled the Nazis in Europe to Cuba in the late 1930s with her parents and siblings. After the war, she studied art in Paris. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself in her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry and had it executed by a number of different silversmiths in Taxco. In the mid-1960s she moved to southern California where she concentrated on her painting and design projects. This is a very rare and early design from the Popowski taller in Taxco. I've only seen one other example of this design EVER in my 45+ year career! It measures 6" long by 1-1/8" wide, and weighs 29.7 grams total. Marked as shown, "Popowski Sterling". Excellent vintage condition.

A big vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and rose quartz abstract modernist pendant on neckring necklace from Kaunis Koru of Helsinki Finland. A lovely and very wearable design likely by Mirjam Salminen who was one of the principal designers at Kaunis Koru at the time! The pendant measures 2" by 2" and hangs on a 17" wearable neckring. Total weight for the necklace is 25.5 grams. The pendant is marked with the Kaunis Koru maker mark, the benchmark "AP" for Kari Aarre Apell, the date letter V7 for 1974, the Finnish national silver mark, and "925" for sterling silver. The accompanying neckring is unmarked, but has been tested and is guaranteed to be sterling silver. Kaunis Koru was a design studio, so they never made the items themselves, they contracted with local silversmiths. Over the years, most of the greats of Finnish Silver design worked at Kaunis Koru including Pekka Piekainen, Bjorn Weckstrom, Mirjam Salminen, and many others. Excellent vintage condition.

A kinetic vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver geometric modernist pendant on chain necklace made by the Hans Berg silversmithy for Kaunis Koru in Helsinki, Finland. A big bold and superbly hand wrought original modernist design from Finland! The little spheres dangle freely inside the flat circles, and move with the movement of the wearer! Kaunis Koru was a design firm that included most of the greats of Finnish modernist jewelry design including Pekka Piekainen, Mirjam Salminen, and many others. Kaunis Koru did not make the jewelry themselves. They contracted with local silversmithies to produce the jewelry designed by their stable of top designers. In this case, the silversmithy was the Hans Berg workshop also in Helsinki. Unfortunately, Kaunis Koru jewelry didn't include designer marks, so who the designer is for a particular piece is usually based on advertisements or company literature or other published materials on the subject, but in many cases a particular design is attributed based on design similarities with other pieces known to be by a particular designer. In this case, I really can't say for sure. This pendant measures 2.75" tall by 2-5/8" wide, and hangs on the 27" original Finnish sterling silver chain. Total weight for the necklace is 25.4 grams. Both pieces are marked, including the Kaunis Koru mark, date letter for 1972, "925H" for sterling silver, Helsinki city mark, Finnish national sterling silver mark, and the Hans Berg silversmithy mark. Excellent vintage condition.

A large vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and green chalcedony modernist cocktail ring by Kultaseppa Salovaara of Finland. Great modernist design that makes a statement on the finger! Measures 7/8" by 3/4" at top, rises 1/2" above the finger, adjustable band presently a size 8 but can be easily sized up or down several sizes, and weighs 5.67 grams total. Marked as shown with the maker mark for Kultaseppa Salovaara, also marked "925 Finland" and two additional marks that are probably import marks to another European country though I can't make them out well enough to say for sure. Excellent vintage condition.

A big pair of vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver Constructivist modernist screwback earrings. Entirely handmade likely one of a kind pair of wearable art earrings! Very reminiscent of the designs of Margaret de Patta etc! A flat sterling triangle with a smaller pierced triangle to one side and oxidized black in the rest, and a single piece of wire that is applied on top of the triangle, then goes thru the triangular cut-out, and winds back around to start it all over again! A genius design, superbly crafted! The earrings measure 1.25" by 1" at fronts, and the pair weigh 5.4 grams total. Marked "Sterling" on the screwbacks as shown. No doubt originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork or labeling that has been lost over the years. In any case, an exceptional pair of wearable art vintage modernist earrings!

Excellent vintage condition.

A large organic vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver biomorphic modernist brooch. Entirely handmade in sterling silver wire and sheet representing the complexities of organic forms! Abstract design that works well as a brooch but can be worn lengthwise as a pendant too! I purchased this outstanding example of mid century modernist jewelry at a San Diego estate sale. It resembles the work of Harry Bertoia, who lived and worked in San Diego for many years, but it is unsigned. Unmarked except for a patent number on the pinback, but tested and guaranteed to be as described. Measures 2-1/2" by 1-1/2". Excellent vintage condition.

A superb and very rare one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver abstract modernist design cocktail ring by mid-century silversmith/enamelist James Parker of San Diego California. James Parker's jewelry was always hand-fabricated and one of a kind, and never cast, made in multiples, or mass-produced. An exceptional ring by this noted California modernist! This ring is part of a collection purchased directly from the estate of the artist. This one of a kind piece of 1950s wearable art by James Parker is entirely hand-fabricated in heavy gauge solid sterling silver forming a design of a raised undulating line over an oxidized background all within an egg-shaped frame that sits atop the ring band. James Parker was in London in 1939 where he purchased a ring from the Georg Jensen shop that inspired him to make jewelry himself when he returned to the US after the Second World War. He was a member of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego and showed his distinctive jewelry designs in a number of national exhibitions, including California Design X at the Pasadena Art Museum, and Craftsmanship in a Changing World in 1956 at the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NY (now known as the Museum of Arts and Design).Parker's jewelry also appeared in American Craft magazine in the 1950s and 60s. More recently, several of his pieces were exhibited in the San Diego Craft Revolution show and book from the Mingei Museum in San Diego. The ring measures 7/8" by 3/4" at top, size 7 US, and weighs 13.7 grams total Marked inside the band as shown with the James Parker conjoined and stylized JP maker mark with "Hand Made", also "Sterling" to the side. Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver and blue topaz modernist pendant on chain necklace. A striking modernist design and entirely handmade! The pendant measures just under 2" long by 1/2" wide, and hangs on an 18" sterling silver chain. The stone measures 5mm diameter. The pendant has a very small hallmark at back which are basically unreadable, but tested and guaranteed to be solid sterling silver and genuine blue topaz. (The matching earrings are marked "925" which I am sure is the mark on this pendant, it's just been badly struck or worn over time.) The chain is marked "AZ Italy" and "Sterling".
I have the matching pair of earrings sold separately in another listing here on Ruby Lane. Excellent vintage condition.

A sleek vintage 1960s handmade sterling silver and vivid orange enamel modernist Thor's Hammer pendant on neckring necklace designed by Bjorn Sigurd Ostern for the firm of David Andersen in Norway. One of my favorite designs by this company! Sculptural and entirely handmade by skilled artisans at the the David Andersen workshop founded in 1876 in the city now called Oslo. The pendant measures 2-3/8" tall by just over 1.5" wide, and hangs on the original hammered sterling silver neckring also by David Andersen that presently will fit up to a 17" neck (snugly), and is easily adjustable a bit to go up or down a couple sizes as needed. The two items together weigh 23.6 grams total. Marked on both items, "D-A" or "David-Andersen" along with "Norway Sterling 925S", and also marked on the pendant, "INV B.S.O." for designer Bjorn Sigurd Ostern. Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver and turquoise Mexican modernist bolo tie designed by Erika Hult de Corral in Mexico. A striking modernist quite likely a one of a kind or at least extremely rare design by this acclaimed artist! I've only seen one other bolo tie design by the artist, and believe she didn't design many of them. Corral studied at the Parsons School of Design in Paris before coming to Taxco where she designed for both Enrique Ledesma and Sigi Pineda before she opened her own shop in 1966. The sterling and turquoise slide measures 1-1/2" by 1-3/4", the sterling terminals measure 1-1/2" long by 5/8" wide, and the original braided black leather cord measures 40" and can be slipped over the head then tightened to the desired length. Total weight for the bolo is 47.8 grams which includes the leather section. According to Bille Hougart, her "pieces are usually marked with a design or inventory number". This bolo tie does not have a design number, and thus it's likely a one of a kind! Marked at back of the slide with her maker mark, "Ric", also "Tax Mex" for Taxco, Mexico, "925" for sterling silver, and post-1980 registry mark "TR-26". Corral was a designer, not a silversmith, and the registry mark is for the silversmith that executed her design for her. The terminals are unmarked which isn't unusual, and have tested as sterling silver quality. Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade sterling silver and amazonite geometric modernist ring by South African metalsmith/designer PJ of Johannesberg. A striking geometric design entirely handmade and with a lovely amazonite stone at top! Measures just over 3/4" diameter at top, ring size 7 US, and weighs 7.4 grams total. Marked inside band at top as shown, "Sterling Made in S. Africa" and maker mark "PJ". According to a short article I found online on the Art Jewelry Forum, all of the modernist jewelry made in South Africa was by a small group working in Johannesberg in the 1960s and 70s. In excellent vintage condition.

A superb vintage 1980s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and 18K gold overlay geometric modernist brooch. A veritable symphony of geometry, and dimensional to boot! Measures 2.5" across by 1-1/8", and weighs 0.2 ounce or about 6 grams total. Unmarked, and no doubt a one of a kind unique creation by a talented artist/craftsman! I'm sure that this was originally sold in a gallery or art fair with paperwork for the artist, but that information was lost over the years. In any case, the work speaks for itself! Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. Excellent vintage condition.
