Scientists identify potential climate solutions in 'grassy trees' Bamboo, palm, and banana trees look and act like trees, but are actually closer to grasses in how they grow because—unlike trees—their stems do not grow wider over time. However, due to their towering...

Silica mapping (in red) in leaf and stem transverse sections of three families of Poales. (A–C) Flagellaria indica (Flagellariaceae), phytoliths present in bundle sheath cells, absent from epidermis. (A) Leaf transverse section, with silica 2.4%. (B) Single phytolith. (C) Vascular bundle, with phytoliths restricted to bundle sheath cells and calcium oxalate crystals present in surrounding mesophyll cells. (D) Glyceria maxima (Poaceae), phytoliths restricted to epidermal cells overlying vascular bundles (silica 3.1% in this view). (E, F) Restio sp. (Restionaceae), phytoliths present in bundle sheath cells (silica 6.7% in F), and single phytolith. Scale bars: A, E = 100 µm; B, F = 10 µm; C, D = 25 µm.

Using EDX mapping, the team shows phytoliths from in different cell types - sometimes in the lumen, sometimes in the walls - and are often linked to ferulic acid... except in orchids 👀
Not all monocots are silica show-offs, but the story they tell is brill-iant 🌟

🌱🌾🌎🌿🧪🌽 #Seeds of #monocots include grasses that are carbohydrates for majority of people on Earth. Maize/Corn (Zea mays) cultivated about 9000 years, starting southern Mexico now worldwide. More produced (weight) than other grains. Food for humans, animals; materials for chemical industry. #BUC2025

#Monocots have one cotyledon, parallel leaf veins, and #flower parts in multiples of three. Examples include the #iris, #daffodil, and #orchid.

#Dicots have two cotyledons, branching leaf veins, and flower parts in multiples of four or five. Examples include the #daisy, #rose, and #sunflower.

Flowering plants are of two key types.

#Monocots and #dicots are two major types of flowering #plants distinguished by their seed structure.

That's where "cot" in the name comes from. It refers to the cotyledon, or seed leaf. The cotyledon is a significant part of the embryo within the seed.

For my indoor cat I maintain a patch of grass that I move outside whenever it's sunny. Also features a little furrow in which I hide toys. I might upgrade to a larger tray so that she can roll around on it like a bed (monocot?). Sharing in case you know a cat who might enjoy. #cats #grass #monocots

Palm trees belong to the monocot group of flowering plants, which also includes grasses, and as such are more closely related to grass than other trees.

When I was at Lesnes Abbey Woods yesterday I spotted a single Bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, in flower. It had obviously heard about the #WildflowerHour #Monocots challenge and wanted to get in on the action. 💙

Only managed naturalised Snow Drops but they do demonstrate the attributes of #monocots: 3 sepals/petals, leaves are linear, leaf veins run parallel along the leaves #wildflowerhour
