With a Bird's Eye View to Grasslands, Tucker Lutter Joins Audubon as Iowa Conservation Manager DES MOINES, Iowa (March 10, 2026)—The National Audubon Society has hired Tucker Lutter as Iowa Conservation Manager for Audubon Upper Mississippi River. In this role, Lutter will lead the rollout of the Audubon Conservation Ranching program in Iowa, partnering with farmers and ranchers to advance bird-friendly land management practices across the state. A native of Bronson, Iowa, Lutter is eager to work alongside farm and ranch producers in his home state to strengthen grassland conservation and expand opportunities for working lands that benefit birds and people. “I am proud to be working with cattle and bison producers in Iowa,” said Lutter. “Growing up in the state, I have witnessed the loss of prairie and the decline of grassland birds. Iowa is over 97% privately owned, and farmers and ranchers who implement conservation practices are our best hope to protect avian resources in the state. With the efforts of conservation-conscious producers, we will continue to hear meadowlarks singing every spring and experience the thrill of flushing a covey of Northern Bobwhite.” “Audubon Conservation Ranching is a growing solution because it connects all of us—farmers and ranchers who steward these landscapes every day and the public who benefit from healthy grasslands. Tucker’s...

Grasslands and Wetlands Are Being Gobbled Up By Agriculture, Mostly Livestock This article originally appeared on Inside Climate News, a nonprofit, non-partisan news organization that covers climate, energy and the environment. Sign up for their newsletter here. Agriculture is widely known to be the biggest driver of forest destruction globally, especially in sprawling, high-profile ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest. But new research published this week finds that non-forest ecosystems—the world’s grasslands, savannas and wetlands—are being devoured for agriculture at nearly four times the rate as forests. As with forests, the primary driver is livestock. “The goal of this research was really just to understand where in the world this is happening,” said Elise Mazur, a researcher with the Land and Carbon Lab at the World Resources Institute and one of the report’s authors. “We know where deforestation is occurring. But we were less sure about where non-forest ecosystems are being lost.” The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is a unique attempt to analyze which types of agriculture are forcing the conversion of natural ecosystems on a global scale, and then to attribute that conversion to demand for specific commodities. Making that link is critical. Grasslands occupy more of the world’s surface than any other ice-free land,...

Warming winters are disrupting the hidden world of fungi - the result can shift mountain grasslands to scrub When you look out across a snowy winter landscape, it might seem like nature is fast asleep. Yet, under the surface, tiny organisms are hard at work, consuming the previous year’s dead plant material and other organic matter. These soil microorganisms – Earth’s recyclers – liberate nutrients that will act as fertilizer once grasses and other plants wake up with the spring snowmelt. Key among them are arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, found in over 75% of plant species around the planet. These threadlike fungi grow like webs inside plant roots, where they provide up to 50% of the plant’s nutrient and water supply in exchange for plant carbon, which the fungi use to grow and reproduce. In winter, the snowpack insulates mycorrhizal fungi and other microorganisms like a blanket, allowing them to continue to decompose soil organic matter, even when air temperatures above the snow are well below freezing. However, when rain washes out the snowpack or a healthy snowpack doesn’t form, water in the soil can later freeze – as can mycorrhizal fungi. In a new study in the Rocky Mountain grasslands, we dug into plots of land that for three decades scientists led by ecologist John Harte had warmed...

Agriculture Is Taking Over Grasslands, Wetlands and Other Overlooked Ecosystems Across the world, farmland is replacing some of our most important ecosystems. We’ve known for years that agriculture is rapidly consuming forests — an issue the world urgently needs to tackle. Yet this problem doesn’t stop at the forest’s edge. New research from WRI, Land & Carbon Lab, Rainforest Alliance, and the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre indicates that the world lost as much as 95 million hectares of non-forest natural ecosystems, including grasslands, savannas and wetlands, to annual crops between 2005 and 2020. A comparable area (95 million hectares more) was likely converted to pasture. Together, this is an area nearly as large as Indonesia — and roughly four times the amount of forest that was lost to annual crops and pasture over the same period. Though sometimes overlooked in conservation efforts, non-forest ecosystems are vital to people and the planet. Grasslands are estimated to hold between 20% and 35% of land-based carbon stores. Wetlands (with and without trees) hold another 20%-30%, despite covering much less area. Non-forest ecosystems provide crucial wildlife habitat, protect soil, sustain fresh water supplies, and underpin food security and livelihoods for over a billion people around the world. Companies and governments alike have...

Researchers say they are the most at-risk ecosystems on Earth...

Grasslands Could Shrink by Half As Climate Change Intensifies, Study Warns Grasslands supporting over one billion grazing animals could shrink by 36–50% by the end of the century due to climate change, threatening global food systems. Low-income countries, particularly in Africa, will be hardest hit, jeopardizing food security, livelihoods, and the global livestock industry. — By the end of the century, grasslands that currently support 1.5 billion cows, sheep, and goats around the world will contract by anywhere between 36–50% due to the impacts of climate change, a new analysis has found. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), which conducted the study, said the impacts of climate change on grasslands in Africa are particularly worrying. Because African climate conditions are already almost at the extremes of what grasslands can bear, if global emissions from fossil fuel combustion and other sources are reduced drastically, African grasslands may contract by only 16%. A “business as usual” scenario, where emissions continue to rise, may lead to losses of up to 65%. “Climate change will shift and significantly contract these spaces globally, leaving fewer spaces for animals to graze. Importantly, much of these changes will be felt in countries that already experience hunger, economic and political instability, and higher levels of gender inequity,”...

Newly Audubon Certified, Nantz Land & Cattle Helping Grassland Birds Gain Ground in Texas Throckmorton, Texas (February 5, 2026) — Nantz Land & Cattle, owned and operated by Robert and Stacy Nantz in the Rolling Plains region of the Texas Panhandle, is the newest ranch to earn the National Audubon Society’s Bird-Friendly Land Certification. Obtained through Audubon’s Conservation Ranching program, the certification recognizes lands managed for birds and biodiversity. Audubon Conservation Ranching is a conservation, certification, and science program rolled into one that lends hope to struggling grassland bird populations. Since 1970, grassland birds have experienced the steepest population drop – 43% according to the most recent State of the Birds Report – in any terrestrial biome. The primary culprits behind these losses in Texas and nationwide include habitat loss and degradation, tree and shrub encroachment, and pesticide applications—all challenges addressed by the program’s collaborative approach to support land management that enhances biodiversity and productivity. For more than 15 years, the Nantz family faced the challenges of conventional ranching. In 2023, they turned to regenerative practices, transforming not only their cattle and land, but also their outlook. Today, Robert and Stacy steward 18,820 acres in Throckmorton County. The land is actually owned by Travis County (Austin area in central Texas), part of Texas’s “school...

Norway's species-rich grasslands in decline: New monitoring reveals alarming trends This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlighted the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: Land-use change in the form of abandonment is a major influencing factor for semi-natural grasslands. This is clearly illustrated in this area on the Helgeland coast, where the semi-natural grassland to the left of the fence has ceased grazing and is in poor condition, while the semi-natural grassland to the right is grazed and in good condition. Credit: Annette Bär / NIBIO A new national monitoring program provides, for the first time, area-representative knowledge of semi-natural grasslands in Norway. The results show that this habitat covers a larger area than previously mapped, but that most grasslands are abandoned and in the process of becoming encroached upon. The area-representative monitoring of semi-natural grasslands (ASO) is the first national program to give a representative picture of both the extent and condition of semi-natural grasslands in Norway—a habitat with particularly high species diversity that is in rapid decline and listed as critically endangered in the 2025 Norwegian Red List for Ecosystems and Habitat Types. Between 2021 and 2025, NIBIO mapped 713 semi-natural grasslands across the country. Based on...
