White cherry blossom on a twig studded with unopened buds illuminated by late winter sun
In the cemetery today:
Air still chill despite the sun
Dunnock & Robin singing
A collared dove launches wings whistling into the air
First blossoms of cherry, petals creased like crumpled bedclothes
Crocuses battered by the recent rains

A wet week in rural Ireland: sick goldfinches, a warped front door, and a reminder from a cedar tree that “beyond redemption” is sometimes plain wrong!

Evening drive... A deer, larger than usual, moving along a woodland border. Fields the colour of sienna. A heron, left the roadside at the last second, beautiful creature traversed the field. At home, tawny owls communicating, their calls haunt. Brilliant, waxing moon.

A Turkeytail fungus growing from fallen timber. Various shades of brown and deep burgundy, like a rosette.
Searching for fungi/mushrooms the other day, I found this Trametes versicolor - #Turkeytail growing out from some fallen timber. These are very common #fungi but can be quite beautiful too. #UK #NatureNotes #ecology
Carder bee on thistle
Russet toadstool surrounded by autumn leaves
Speckled brown Agaric toadstools emerging from woodland soil
Went on a ramble yesterday from my house through the local woods and fields.
A late-flowering thistle still attracting bees.
A variety of fungi despite the dry weather.

This morning’s aprication punctuated by the loud sussuration of our pair of kereru swooping from tree to tree, part playful courtship, part looking for more bursting buds to savage.

Clusters of small dark-purple fiddlewood berries hanging among glossy green leaves, ripening in the sun.
The fiddlewood berries are ripening now. I still haven’t figured out which creatures feed on them, but I’m sure some bird or rodent does.

Grainy photo of a large brown/gold wedge-tailed eagle from below in 3/4 profile with light hitting its large curved beak and blue sky above
Another image of the same eagle with light hitting its back and folded wing feathers
We had to pass under this magnificent Wedge-tailed eagle 🦅 sitting 5 meters above our driveway at the end of our dog walk this morning #naturenotes #putalina
Lathkill Dale reminded me that silence isn’t empty — it’s full of answers.
Camped beneath the stars, hiked through stories carved in stone and stream.
No signal. Just stillness. And somehow, that was enough.

Gratuitous photo of my knee strapped up, for sympathy votes
All a bit quite round this way lately, thanks to my joints (plus the latest in a very long line of physios) and Tj’s imminent big project go-live, but at least the local critters & flowers are keeping me entertained #naturenotes
An orange and brown Comma butterfly feeding on a white bramble flower.

I’ve been enjoying watching the butterflies, bees and hoverflies this morning and their favourite nectar source appears to be the wild bramble flowers hanging over my fence. Here’s the Comma butterfly which arrived just as we we’re having lunch.
Pink , 5 petalled , Common Century flower growing amongst grass.
So happy to find the pink Common #Century flowers doing so well in the hay #meadows this week. #wildflowers #naturenotes

Bluebells in full bloom in Rannerdale in the English Lake District.
Last May I was lucky enough to grab a brief trip over to #Rannerdale in the #LakDistrict to see the amazing display of #Bluebells clothing the fellside. These #wildflowers are indicators of #ancientWoodland and so help inform us of what the landscape was like in times past. #NatureNotes #UK
Went for a wander through the woods and heathland around Eyeworth pond in the New Forest yesterday. Even at 10 in the morning the birdsong was stunning: mostly song thrush, wren, blackcap, chaffinch. A single common redstart was my 1st of the year (male, singing), and at least 2 cuckoos, 1 seen […]
A tall, mature Scots Pine tree
#EarthDay #ScotsPine #naturenotes Strength and longevity,I love what trees represent.Trees like this veteran Pine have witnessed the past and look forward to the future. If we think more of what the planet needs instead of what we can take from it perhaps we’ll also have a future to look forward to.
A Chestnut tree bud beginning to open.
The Horse Chestnut tree buds are beginning to burst here in north-east England. They’re covered in a sticky, tacky substance which helps protect it from severe weather and attacks from insects and animals perhaps wanting to eat it. #natureNotes #Trees #Aesculushippocastanum
A yellow Dandelion flower with a black and tan banded bumblebee collecting nectar.
Remember that #Dandelions are a great source of nectar for our #pollinating insects like #bees, #hoverflies, #butterflies #moths and #beetles. Please don’t pull them up or mow them down. Here’s a Carder bee enjoying a bit of nectaring.

A Peacock Butterfly feeding on a yellow Dandelion.
Second time lucky. Happy that I managed to photograph this beautiful peacock butterfly in my garden this morning. Hopefully 2025 will be a better year for Butterfly numbers than last season. #Butterflies #natureNotes #Ecology #UK
